Ok, I’ve seen a slew of local efforts to help Haiti, and now I can’t seem to find them all, so I beg you all to contribute to this post in whatever way you can. If you know of other opportunities, please add them to the comments.
This week, through Sunday, when a guest brings in a copy of the attached message D’Amico and Sons will donate 10% of their total purchase to the American Red Cross Haiti Disaster Relief.
This Friday, at 6pm, head to the Cedar Cultural Center for the Solidarité Avec Haïti: Earthquake Relief Fundraiser. Contributing performers will include Viviana Pintado, Maria Isa, Kenn Wanaku, Doug Little & Charanga Tropical, Yenyeré, and Batucada do Norte.
Also on Friday, @msptweetup is hosting a social media event at Grumpy’s (on Washington) to benefit Haiti. “Buckets of Change,” as the event is called, is counting on all of us having those random buckets of change around our homes ‚Äî you know, the jars, drawers, containers of any sort we all discard our loose change into so as not to find it on the floor, under the bed, and in the coach pillows. Bring your buckets of change to Grumpy’s at 7pm to donate to Haiti relief.¬† Bring dollars, bring quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Bring it all. All proceeds will go directly to the American Red Cross to benefit Haiti Relief and Development.
TODAY: Hip Hop for Haiti at Nomad.
THURS: Rally for Haiti at Graves & Haiti Relief Event at The View
Anything else? Please let us know.

Personally, Mrs. Lungs and I are sending a cash donation to “Doctors Without Boarders USA.” The “Feed My Starving Children” charity seems to do good work. You can volunteer to assemble meals later this month.

What do these Drs. you’re donating to have against leasing out rooms, bob? Seems people in lesser affected parts of Haiti putting up boarders could help the situation some. Reports yesterday indicated a lot of people leaving the disaster zone for other towns.I did donate to Drs. without Borders. Though their online donation form needs some work.

It sounds like there is a flood of people leaving the heavily-damaged quake area to the rural areas, which may lessen the enormous challenges aid workers and security personel are facing. Or, it could overwelm rural areas limited resources, as happened here in Minnesota when city people fled the 1918 “Spanish Flu,” only to bring it with them to rural areas with few doctors and hospital beds. In any case, they need our help, and I’m glad to give.

I’d rather donate to finish the 35W-Crosstown expansion

We did our donation to Red Cross via text message. Greatest and easiest way to donate ever! (And yes, I’m aware of its limitations.) And this is a good time to remind everyone to donate blood. While it may not make it to Haiti, having a stockpile of blood is very imporant here. It is free and it is easy, assuming you didn’t have rabies shots in the last year like I did.

Or you are a man that has ever had sex with another man since 1974.
January 19, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Uhh… should I assume this comment is on the wrong post?
January 19, 2010 at 4:12 pm
No I was tacking onto the last comment by kc! about not being about to donate blood.
January 19, 2010 at 4:13 pm
Ah… gotcha. Couldn’t find the connection. Maybe I’m slow today. Or… well.. whatever…

Or having sex with a man who has had sex with a man since 1974. Or having sex with anyone from Sub-Saharan Africa. Or a variety of other racist and homophobic rules for donating blood. They really need to update that. Especially since they test all the blood anyhow.

Or visited many parts Mexico (and several other 2nd/3rd world countries) outside of the common tourist locales.
