Dude Weather Subscribe to Secrets Minneapolis / St. Paul
Hello fellow Rakers and MNSpeakers, and welcome to Secrets of the City.
As you can tell, Secrets of the City is a hybrid of rakemag.com and mnspeak.com. All the features of both sites are still here, including Today's Talk from MNSpeak and the blogs, magazine articles and entertainment databases from The Rake. We hope that the fusion of content will make Secrets of the City an essential daily digest of Twin Cities culture.
A NOTE ON LOGIN: You can still log in using your Rake OR MNSpeak usersname and password. If you have any trouble with your login or email newsletter subscription, please email wmaster [at] secretsofthecity [dot] com. However, login is no longer necessary to comment.
Please let us know what you think of the new site. You can post questions, comments, and bug reports in this thread. We'll keep a link at the top of the site for the next week or two.
Look forward to some new features over the next several weeks, including the return of the MNSpeak Blog Aggregator and an improved events and restaurants database.
To stay up to date on all the Secrets of the City, visit the Subscribe page for links to our emails, RSS feeds, Twitter feeds, Facebook/MySpace pages, etc.
Thanks to Adsoka, who did the first page design and logo for Secrets of the City (notice the facelift on our mascot, Owen). Thanks also to Michael Amundson, our web developer/designer who was kind enough to work all weekend to finish the site.
A fun technical fact: When we migrated the data from Rex's original MNSpeak MS Access database into Drupal (our new CMS), we had 188,356 comments in 5,944 posts.
FYI: Restaurants and events will still be hosted at www2.rakemag.com for the next few weeks. Both pages might also look a little funky for most of the morning.
SHOCKING!
(RIP MNspeak)
This makes sense though. I always lamented the loss of curated events on MNspeak, so it will be nice to have access to that stuff in one place.
It looks like the Recent Comments column is floating on the right side of the screen over some other stuff (MacOS 10.5.5/Firefox 2.0.0.18).
Selfish THing: since I'm bringing MNstories back (really), it's one less MN_thing to get confused.
Still, this feels different doesn't it? Will take some getting used to.
Authors are messed up on archives. Look like it's putting the name of the admin login that entered the item, rather than the actual author. Big liability issues there.
Does the search function even work? The results don't seem to be making any sense.
Ok, I'll shut up now. I promise not to look at it again until morning. Oh, wait. It is morning.
The Recent Comments column knows its place in Safari, but is out of line in Opera and Firefox.
This will take some getting used to, but I like it.
Oh- I just noticed that I have to hit preview to see what my comment will look like. I really liked that window on mnspeak that created the preview as I typed. Whatever...
Yowza. Fix those bylines. They're all wrong.
I think this looks great... and finallly-- new features! Or the return of old features. But it'll seem new!
I'll miss the URL, as "minn-speak" became something you could talk about and people knew it. "Secrets of the City" sounds so... different. I hope it catches on, grows, and succeeds. Good luck guys!
And I'm impressed that you moved all the posts and comments and they still redirect from the original URLs. Lots of work, I imagine. (you don't have to preview- you can just click "Save" on the comment)
Interesting to see if I can get to this from work now.
The "Older" link at the top of this page doesn't seem to work.
I can't log in. There's no password box to enter my password.
This place was better when Max was here.
OK, now I'm logged in!
Hmmmmmmm....
How do you submit a story? I don't have anything today, but need to be prepared.
Glad I can get decent RSS of what used to the The Rake's content now. Subscribed.
May I ask which City has the Secrets, or is that a secret?
Help! I keep repeating....
Well! This will take some getting used to. To. To. to. to. to.
In honor of the new site, I'm retiring jderusha, and changing my posting name to my full name. To think: Kevin From Minneapolis can return.. as can all of the names with more than 8 characters. Thrilling.
I fear change.
So the passwords were stored in plain text. MNspeak was better when Rex was a bad programmer.
as a bit of feedback, it would be nice to have Drupal's Marksmarty input module as an option.
I've written about ten comments only to delete and re-write them.
Here is my final take...for now
Interesting: like the change to drupal, design is crispy white(clean), apprehensive about future. Change is wierd!
While were talking modules...any chance for an openid login module?
That didn't take long. I noticed that MNSpeak was down at about 10pm last night, and didn't know if the new site would be up this soon.
I can't wait to explore more.
I see I have been commenting on this site for 13 hours, 14 minutes.
Odd, it seems longer..
A few things.
1. Why the change?
2. Where you select your timezone, there should be an option for America - Minneapolis. I mean, come on.
3. It says I am not authorized to view my personal contact form.
From the feedback file: I hope there's a plan to provide more information on the User Info page. I liked discovering blogs of my favorite MNSpeak commenters, and right now, there's nothing on the user info page.
Ok I'll have to get used to the change. Fine. However, your CSS is broken. You should have checked it against a few more browsers.
Hmmm, I kind of don't like it, like CINF I don't like change, but I guess I can get used to it,.
1. Is WISpeak behinds this change?
2. I like the personal email form.
3. No, seriously, is WISpeak really mad at us for all that Wisconsin stuff? I mean, we totally meant everything we said about it but, come on, WISpeak, don't you think killing the MNSpeak domain was a bit much?
4. Get rid of the bold headlines on the comments.
5. Can we insert images? YouTube vids?
6. Will we be able to have profile pictures?
7. Where are the Archives?
8. Dammit, WISpeak.
Weak.
Actually WiSpeak just merged with stevens-point-singles.net.
@Kurtis
I swear, they'd better watch their back. Joe The Plumber has nothing to do but design websites and secure our dream, to destroy WISpeak.
Headlines are annoying
4. Get rid of the bold headlines on the comments.
Agreed on that one.
Someone needs to organize a Last Ever MNSpeak Gathering.
Grumpy's on Washington on Friday?
Anonymous comments? That seams like a bad idea, don't you think? Whats the point of signing in now?
I also prefer new comments on top rather than bottom. Who would have thought those bastards at WISpeak could be so clever???
That Joe the Plumber is going to get more chicks than the guy Eagan.
I can't make Friday.
JtP seems to have a real grasp of HTML. /blinky /scroll
@champs: Just because they moved the password doesn't mean it was stored in plain text. A hashed version can still be moved just fine. Even if it was clear text, I hope you're not using the same PW you use for everything else.
Like Mr. DeRusha, I, too, am pleasently surprised to see that they managed to keep the old URLs working. That's no easy feat, but important for search engine rankings. I was prepared for this upgrade to suck, but so far it's not too shabby. Kudos.
It would be kind of nice if we could get back the rotating headers that MNSpeak had, tho. They were kind of cheesy, but I appreciated seeing the grain belt sign or the garbage burners there once in a while.
:'(
Ditto on the bold headlines.
The eye is accustomed to going TO the bold. Since it is not a real headline but just the first few words of the comment, it makes sense for us to skip the headline.
But the headline is bold! Now we must train our eyes AWAY FROM the bold?!
Otherwise, I'm sure I will get used to the change.
Hate the Ad in the header. Formatting seems to be working on Chrome. Format seems very Web 0.5. I guess I'll wait to see if the charm of MNspeak carries over.
Posts could wrap a little too to make them easier to read.
When it previews it doesn't show them how they will actually post.
The new format isn't bad, but it's kind of like when you try and wean a kid off his blankie or pacifier...I'm down for Grumpy's though.
I hate the new format of MNSPEAK...part of the reason is I've never liked RAKE.
I'll try it for a week...might just delete the bookmark.
:(
My name is cut off, it looks like I'm Kevin from how the Associated Press abbreviates Minnesota.
Looking forward to
see what new terms come up. "MNspeakers" as a term will probably stick around a while, but I'm sure new terms will arise.
This has ushered in a new era: for the next couple years, at least, we can organize several last evar MNspeak get-togethers.
Also, people need something to grouse about now that the election is over.
Oh, and I wonder if the rest of the state is bummed to be unacknowledged in the name of this site now. Secrets of the cities? What if someone from an outer-ring suburb tries to sneak on here?
Perhaps it's just my lame-o work browser, but everything is center aligned for me. It's annoying as hell.
First! Anonymous post?
It's me Dougie D but wanted to try this. If you enter in the Captcha work and then preview you have to enter it again!
But seriously, I'm also curious as to why there was a change instead of just prettifying MNSpeak and leaving be as a standalone site.
Or worse, some one gets confused, and thinks there city can play to. Go away, Seattle, this isn't for you...
Why the change?
gonna take a stab at this one.
Take the pageviews from MNspeak bring them under the umbrella of the Rake> charge more for display ads on the Rake. I honestly can't believe that its taken this long.
also +1 on the fact that usernames link to a profile and not the users website.
"RakeSpeakers?" "Rakers?"
We know about the messed up authors on old content. We'll fix that.Gotta do another data import.
Sorry about the messed up CSS. If you see something, please take a screenshot and email it to wmaster.
User profiles: Sorry they're blank right now. Working on that. You'll be able to choose which information shows up and we might even do a contact form so other people can message you without knowing your email (optional of course).
Oh, and we're getting rid of the comment titles. Annoying.
So I tried to enter an anonymous post and it still hasn't posted. Will these all be approved prepost? Might as well get rid of the option then. If the post comes in so far out of the stream of the conversation it will be odd.
DougieD, please don't go away! You are one of my faves! If you stay you will help transfer the charm of MNspeak to SecretSpeak.
Will someone show us how to post a photo? I have a test below based on the MNspeak lesson I got a while ago, but don't think it worked. Oh wait, maybe it did.
I have to go work now, catch ya later.
<img src=" http://www.sugarsays.com/.a/6a00e54ff18131883400e55478cb828834-pi" width = 400 height = 300>
Wait, so that contact form idea isn't official? Oh, I thought it was. Please do it.
re: bixby:
4. Get rid of the bold headlines on the comments.
On it.
5. Can we insert images? YouTube vids?
Eventually.
6. Will we be able to have profile pictures?
Yep.
7. Where are the Archives?
they're searchable, but the search engine sucks right now. Working on it.
8. Dammit, WISpeak.
also not a fan of comment paging.
I rather liked scrolling through the superlong openthread comments.
maybe I am the only one, but I for one don't need another click when trying to see what someone said earlier that was referenced in a later comment.
First rule of SecretSpeak: Don't talk about SecretSpeak...
also not a fan of comment paging. I rather liked scrolling through the superlong openthread comments. maybe I am the only one, but I for one don't need another click when trying to see what someone said earlier that was referenced in a later comment.
I concur.
I'm also a little curious if this site resesign incorporated ideas of things that people who used MNSpeak might have suggested in the past. Basically, was there any informal market research?
KC, I won't be able to make in to a Last Ever gathering on Friday because I'm going to this 40th birthday party that evening. Er, it's my own. I mostly invited University peeps since it's at the U campus club after work, but if anyone wants to know more send me an email.
Alright I've taken in enough now to make a ruling:
Weak
The old MNspeak was essentially a locally focused unfiltered user generated content site steered and cultivated by mr. sparber. It was relatively loose...not 4chan loose but still pretty slutty.
This feels fairly neutered to me.
So what do we call this? Secrets of the City is too big of a mouthful. It doesn't flow off the tongue like "Minn-Speek." SOTC = Sawt-See?? Soh-Tee-See? I don't have time to say multiple words. I'm a busy, busy, disarmingly beautiful man.
I'm not going anywhere Jane. I'll give it a few weeks to work out the kinks. I'm sure the interface will improve greatly it's only day one.
I liked to think of it as a bootleg Metafilter. A Minnefilter™, if you will.
I wonder who the Secret Sadmin is? I've got ten bucks says it's Sailor Martin.
pages are lame.
9. Return to single massive page.
Should references to the old site now be "MnSpake"?
I hope someone's getting a raise for this.
Also, will there be a more prominent "submit a post" link? Will there be a history of submitted posts in one's profile? I liked being able to look back and see what I'd submitted and what others had.
Yeah, the pagination makes it feel like Gawker...
Is it to late to to back?
er... go back...
Didn't even bother to log in.
Goodbye, MNspeak.
Basically flushed a good site down the toilet.
Not only is this ugly, but the fact that it's now associated with a local rag is just annoying beyond anything I can put into words.
oh yeah, did I mention this site is UGLY?
SOCers
Rakists?
Jane, we could always go the route the press went with Prince...
"The site formaly known as MNSpeak."
Bob from Lung Ass?!?
Seeing what happened to "Kevin from Minnespolis," I think I'll remain Just Plain Bob.
Sorry about the comment paging. That sucks. Adding to the list...
"Jane, we could always go the route the press went with Prince..."
I want my own glyph!
The pagination cranks up page views which cranks up ad revenue. Also makes it a little bit lighter load on the DB, but not much.
aliecat can we use a symbol of some sort to?
SOCers? Pronounced suckers? WiSpeak will have a field day.
We'll put more "submit a post" buttons on the pages.
profiles will contain old posts and comments of that user.
(SecretsAdmin was me, btw, logged in as the wrong user.)
I don't like how the comment buttons say "Save" and "Preview". I liked the old way of having a live preview. And I don't want to "save" a comment, I want to "post" it or "add comment" it.
I see there's also a rich text editor. I don't want that clowna** editing my text. Don't trust him.
Vithar, yes, maybe the Rake's design team can get on that...
Actually, I think it's a secret.
Agree with Ang, all the comments being centered is annoying, makes it hard to read.
I need a button to do my linking, I don't remember how to link using html.
Are we going to get more content today? It would be nice to see what kind of content will be on here (if it is different) and how the commenting on it goes. That's what really matters.
MNspoken
Geez, some of you guys are way too picky.
@KC click on rich text at the bottom of the submission box. There are your buttons. Which is kind of annoying that you have to click on that and switch to WTF but whatever.
Also, didn't know that Barack Obama's "Change" was a blanket statement! I thought he was just kidding and it'd be internet as usual!
Me and my stupid uninformed voting.
What do you guys think about having a stripped down version of the site that's just the MNSpeak/talk section? I don't think that would be that hard to do.
I know this design kind of destroys the charm of MNSpeak (but hopefully this one has a personality of its own).
And don't worry about being affiliated with "a local rag". I think it's more that the local rag is now affiliated with MNSpeak.
I don't like the reverse-chronological order listing for the comments, but I can see that it can be handy if you had been following a thread closely. But if you haven't been paying attention to the thread, then it's like flipping through a book from end to beginning.
Whoa, it just changed. Never mind, then.
What do you guys think about having a stripped down version of the site that's just the MNSpeak/talk section? I don't think that would be that hard to do.
You could call it, I don't know, MNSpeak.
I like the integration, but miss the MNSpeak name. Hope it works out for everyone.
Also, didn't know that Barack Obama's "Change" was a blanket statement! I thought he was just kidding
No, he wasn't.
I don't see much of a personality here at all. Plain white background, static image on top. Yawn. It's not really MNspeak. It's the message board part of some other website.
Also, I highly recommend the Fark Tags extension for firefox. I use it to insert images and links and format stuff for all sorts of posts on all different websites. Including this one. It saves me from having to: a. figure out code b. switch to rich text.
Bixby, sounds like a great idea
Another minor thing... When you click on the tag on the front page, it takes you to the list of comments, but not to the comment itself. Thus, you may have to click to the "last" page to continue with the conversation.
"Rakers" might be better than "Secreters."
The new look and functionality don't bother me. It's just kind of disappointing that MNspeak isn't a separate entity any longer. It kind of felt like you belonged to a club that not everyone knew about. Sort of like the Masons.
Now it seems like the Masons have merged with the Rotarians and I'm not sure the meetings are going to be as fun.
Hmm. Now it's just another blog. Most of the power of MN Speak was its users. Now they have to compete with other content providers, such as Rake writers.
Matt, I think it's OK once you get some of the kinks out. It's just got that new car smell that we'll get used too...
How about "secretions"?
Agree with Douglas - clicking on a "Recent Comment" should take you to the page where that comment resides.
The left alignment feels awkward to me. And I'm going to third the separate pages thing - I don't care how long it gets, it interrupts the flow of the conversation.
MNSpeak existed because there were thoughtful people who kept coming back month after month. That, and its stand-alone nature was very important. By making this change without regard to that group of people, I'm pretty concerned it will just dissolve. Which is sad; I enjoyed MNSpeak.
I do like "Secret Speak" as a name for the Talk section. And thanks Matt for filling in some of the details on the future growth.
I noticed that the headlines are permalinks, and that's kinda cool. You could link back to someone's specific comment to refer to it in a thread. Or in a post on a personal blog.
I hope you wait a couple days or weeks before you consider relaunching a separate, stripped-down talk site. Just like with newspaper redesigns, people hate change. There's advantages to be integrated with the blogs you have here. I think.
Miller, as long as the Kiawanis dudes aren't invited, it's all good.
I've been to rotary meetings. They sing. I'm not singing.
Matt, I think it's OK once you get some of the kinks out. It's just got that new car smell that we'll get used too...
You get used to the new car smell because you got a new car that's, presumably, better than ye old one. I'm not so sure yet that secretsofthecity.com/talk is a better car.
people hate change
That was short-lived. Poor guy, it's all he had.
I hate this comment box. To quote I had to hit rich text editor, which then unhighlited my text so I had to re-hilite and click the I. And the text is way smaller. Just put it all in one screen. Too much having to click.
If they just make the "Headline" the associated comment number then we have an improvement worth something! If you link the comment with the comment on the front page, then voila an actual major improvement.
You get used to the new car smell because you got a new car that's, presumably, better than ye old one. I'm not so sure yet that secretsofthecity.com/talk is a better car.
Right now it feels like a Ford Taurus with rims.
At the top of the page between the post and the comments if you click on "newer" you get a "you are not authorized to view this page."
The line breaks don't occur. That prior comment had a huge gap between the italics and my comment when I typed it. How do I make a big break occur?
The really important question is "How does Marsh feel about this change?"
Sparber is noticeably absent...has he been downsized?
I think I figured out the recent comments link problem. It's because of the pagination. Working on turning that off.
Can there be a stand alone section called MarshSpeak. Please, for the love of hilarity, do make that happen.
Another vote against comment pagination. Another vote against center alignment.
I'm in for Grumpy's on Friday.
I'm not a branding expert, so I've only got my gut feel on what this will do to the MNspeak brand and I'm not a huge fan.
But -- and someone please correct me if I'm wrong -- the benefit to this joint was the curated content (yay, Max!) and the regular commentors who usually have smart things to say. If those things are still present, is it really that bad? I'm expecting that, once all the kinks are worked out, this site will actually be a lot easier to use for us commentor types.
I'm still here. I just don't wake up until 9:30am.
Marsh was a little bent out of shape last night, actually; but I'm pretty sure MarshSpeak would bring him around, Bixby. Of course, Meth recipes would be welcome on that one. Might even be my next project. Hell, I have nothing better to do these days.
turns out you can't disable comment pagination in Drupal (easily, anyway). So we changed it to 300 comments before a new page.
Frankly, I think it "looks" a hell of a lot better than the old site. MNSpeak was never a very attractive site, just functional.
Visually, I'd appreciate a less bright background. MNSpeak was a relaxing "aah." This site is a surprising "Zang!"
Also, finding some way to integrate the local photos would be great. They really grounded MNSpeak in a place.
With MNSpeak, I appreciated the old "7 days out" feature and hated to see it go. I hope this integration will bring it back.
It says something about the philosophy behind the redesign that MNSpeakers, who brought value to the site, weren't consulted on or informed in advance about the change. I'm glad, though, to not have to create a new account, and for the work to preserve the archives.
The whole site seems "busier" now.
... working on dropping the comment titles.
Don't let Max fool you, 9:30 is when he kicks out the hookers and clowns.
How about automatic comment updates without the need to refresh the page?
And yes, user profiles with optional photo and links to websites.
Don't let Max fool you, 9:30 is when he kicks out the hookers and clowns.
I think that was implied, Alie.
And a free 10-minute massage for every comment.
Hi Jerad, we did consult several mnspeakers before launching. Some people just saw the beta site a few days ago, but a lot of people were asked about the concept as far back as a year ago.
Our first priority is making the site work for the most active users, so let us know what sucks and we'll try to fix it.
Agreed on the pagination. When I click on the rich text option, all I see is a line that says web addresses turn into links automatically. I liked the link button, since many urls are downright long and messy.
I could make it to Grumpy's. though I don't know if I'll be able to drink anything other than water.
Marsh was a little bent out of shape last night, actually; but I'm pretty sure MarshSpeak would bring him around,
There would be no living with him, then...
Ooh, I disagree with auto updates; that usually causes more issues than it's worth.
Yeah, I saw Marsh wasn't pleased. I don't know why there wasn't a MarshSpeak long ago.
And I agree with Jerad's last point.
If I could insert pictures I'd find a picture of Grumpy Bear and post that. Partially because it's Monday.
auto updates?
I think I developed a peanut allergy. This would be a disasterous change to my lifestyle.
Well it looks like I can post from my old Sprint phone on the new site. And you know what that means. I am on the toilet right this very second. My online circle of life is complete.
@Kevin
Oh noes! Now you're going to have to sit in the special section of the cafeteria with all the kids who ruin everything for everyone else!
Also, where'd that peanut allergy info come from?
Wow Matt, how many posts have I submitted (approx 70) and I didn't get a beta invite? That's awesome.
I don't know. I eat various nut varieties a lot during the day and now everytime I do I fall under a coughing fit and it feels like my whole throat is spasming itself into a knot. This is worse than popping a groin, cutting my forehead shaving and having MNspeak pulled away without warning - combined!. Next thing you know they'll abruptly cancel LOST.
Weird. If I click on the feed through Google Reader, it keeps asking me if I want to add it to my Reader page.
I ALREADY DID, GOOGLE READER! Stop asking and just click through to this fancy shmancy new site, ok? Sheesh.
The latest comment clicks right to the comment! Matt- are you fixing this stuff on the fly or do you have help? I'm impressed.
MnSpeak tieing itself to a sinking ship like the Rake is a fine example of literary foreshadowing.
you didn't get a beta link, bixby? Sorry, I could have sworn you were on the email list. My apologies.
Matt- are you fixing this stuff on the fly or do you have help? I'm impressed.
Michael, our crack developer, is doing all the work. I'm just reporting what he tells me.
Well I just don't know how I feel. Shocked, dismayed, curious, shocked... mostly just really shocked.
I might have forgotten to include you in my list of possible people to look at the Beta, Bixby. There are a number of people I realize now that I neglected to include.
I blame my root canal surgery.
Matt, great work getting this done. Now decisions about the feedback. Of course I'm biased about the design - love it.
MNSpeak meet Rake; Rake meet MNSpeak. You now have more people reading, seeing your opinion. Have (more) fun.
Tittering at the truncated subject line for Kevin's comment: I think I developed a peanut
I've met The Rake before, it's an asshole.
Just kidding.
I am not into the name at all. First, it sounds too much like "Sex and the City" which has been ripped off in a million different ways. Second, it's trying too hard. Is this site really about "secrets of the city"? Not really. Third, it doesn't even mention MN.
Also, I think the "save" button should be retitled "post" or something like that. I wasn't sure if it was going to post my comment when I clicked it or just save it for later or something.
Now it seems like the Masons have merged with the Rotarians and I'm not sure the meetings are going to be as fun.
Comment titles gone.
Oooh, much better.
Good: comment titles gone, can scroll down a whole page of comments now. thanks! I will continue to monitor lurker usability.
Matt isn't drupal the sh*t.
now just head over to
admin>user management> user settings and click enable on the "picture support" radio button.
Viola we'd have gawker like avatars
Awwww, the link to fresh.mn goes to MinnPost. :(
I do appreciate the fact that Matt (actually Michael) is looking for feedback and making adjustments so fast. Maybe you Rotarians aren't so bad after all...
But Tara is right - "Secrets of the City" just blows. Maybe shoulda done some beta testing on the name.
i fixed the link in my comment.
Secrets of the City was a tagline for the Rake forever, right?
I suppose I could have done that myself, but it felt dirty.
Thanks, Max.
Could we have the domain and code for the old MNspeak? I'm sure some one could keep it online.
Since the answer will be no...
I think I'll abandon this site. Its feels tainted, or stained now. Good by MNspeak, I'll miss you.
What happened to the recent comment section on the front page? I'm afraid to ask, because it's probably right in front of me. But I can't find it!
A little on the name change:
The first goal of the site was to combine the features of rake and mnspeak. The big problem with that is that we have to cater to two audiences: one looking for quick and dirty posts/links and one looking for extended magazine content.
We definitely didn't want to put MNSpeak under the Rake and the opposite was almost as bad. Thus, Secrets of the City.
Ingrid, we working on getting a dedicated "recent comments" page like MNSpeak had.
Yes, Secrets of the City was the Rake tagline.
I, for one, welcome our new WISpeak overlords.
I'm sure I'll get used to the new set-up eventually, but I sure will miss the name "MNSpeak."
Hey, as long as we can still talk about bacon and make bitchy "you're mom" comments, it's all good.
I have to admit, some of the reactions are rather amusing. Tainted? Good grief. It looks different and it has a different name. It's still the same concept, the same site, the same commenters. Well, the ones that haven't jumped ship because they feel blindsided.
Calm down, everyone. It's going to be okay.
Congrats on the new look/URL. 'Bout time!
<<
dang.
Change...
Do we have to???
Sorry if this request has already been made or if the functionality is already here and I'm missing it, but can we have a "link" button again that allows us to add URLs? I don't know how do it without the button. :(
<a href="linkypoo.htm">textypoo</a>
sorry the comment form sucks. Michael's eating breakfast, so no changes for a few minutes. getting basic link/bold/ital buttons back would be great.
or you could just paste it directly cause ummm
*webpage addresses and email addresses turn into links automagically.
< strong> without the space is bold
just write < strong> your bold text here
and remove the spaces between the carats
sorry you always have to end tags in html too
so make sure you put
< / strong>

Yum. Carats!
Stop patronizing everybody that thinks this sucks, ang. (Read that last word like "meng.") I will give these losers the leader they need: I believe in you! I think it sucks too! Goddamn it's bright in here, meng!
yeah doug no embeds or piccies yet :(
...I am guessing on accounts of cross site scripting vulnerabilities.
how will we live without rickrolls or lolcats????
Marsh comes out swinging. Shit's about to go CRAZY in here.
or you could just paste it directly cause ummm *webpage addresses and email addresses turn into links automagically.
Yes, but many links are long and ugly (like the strib's). It's nice to be able to hide all that behind a single hypertexted word or two.
Bring it, Marsh.
Oh, thank God, I was about to call the cops to check on Marsh's status...
effen strib...I shoulda known.
And I'm so bummed I wasn't beta'd. Because the earlier I could've told you this sucks, the better.
The Steve Marsh impersonation is a 10 concept, but the execution is hovering around a 6 or 7.
The Steve Marsh impersonation is a 10 concept, but the execution is hovering around a 6 or 7.
No, that's Marsh all right. 10 concept, 6 or 7 execution.
Who said that? That wasn't very nice.
If there's one thing MNSpeak needs it's a contrary opinion, regardless of the topic. I am here to fill that void!
I agree with Kurtis on the Marsh front. Fairly run of the mill execution.
I would also like to point out that something isn't fully loading on this page. It keeps indicating that it is loading more, but never completes it. I don't know if it is intentional...
@DouglasG: That's what she said
Another vote for Secret Speak (nicely done alie)
Left alignment (in IE 6) ftw! Thanks!
It already looks 10x better than it did this morning. I'm super impressed.
"Secret Speak."
That's got a nice ring to it. And it sounds sort of dirty.
It already looks 10x better than it did this morning. I'm super impressed.
That's what she said!
Shut up, kurtis.
Okay, refer to my twitter for the specific reasons why this sucks, but I'd like to point out some other--to belabor ang's asshole-ish tone--points of amusement. This just shows so much contempt for the idea of what was a community. I know that's a corny word, but by just trashing the mnspeak name and expecting us to come someplace that looks like the rake and quacks like the rake...well, I feel like a stat. And not in the kinky, "wow, this what girls must feel like all the time!" way. Well, maybe a little.
I wish to change my username without having to register a new account. Can you have a username and then an option to publicly display a different name? That'd be awesome.
This site looks better and more MnSpeaky than it did a couple hours ago.
I have the distinction of being the first SOC Puppet to have his post taken down on this site.
Some may say that was the first tangible sign of real improvement in this forum.
The question is, will it be an end to the JustPBob double post? Only time will tell...
I don't know, I guess I never really felt quite as passionate about MNSpeak as Marsh.
Oh, and only sort of related, but I'm glad to see that the feeds are no longer truncated.
to whomever posted under "Stevemarsh" as if he were a concerned community member...LULZ.
Site's better now than it was a few hours ago. Keep up this speed of development! How about real profile pages?
My user links to a basically empty profile -- and people can't logically end up with my name or website for example. Nothing extensive, just a way for people to see someone's user ID and then click to get to a little bit about them.
Best would be if clicking on my name went to the url of my choice, but I understand that isn't always the right choice.
1) Whoa, big changes.
2) I didn't see anyone else mention this, but FYI if you skip the front page of the site and go directly to the Today's Talk page it looks a bit like the old site.
3) I think I could hit Grumpy's on Friday.
4) For serious, mnspeakers (SOCers, ad nauseam) need to learn some HTML. It's not too hard to insert a link....
I agree with the above: SOCers (pronounced "suckers").
I haven't been this enthused by speedy development since the Olsen Twins were 17.
I thought SOCers was pronounced futbol. Perhaps that is just outside the US.
Whatever, I'm totally on Team Marsh regardless of the topic. Should I have not voted for him and instead voted for Al Franken?
re: Marsh's real concerns on Twitter. He does he real concerns. If that makes him a tool for having them and expressing them, then I must be a huge fucking tool.
Although it wasn't technically neutral, I liked the *feeling* that MNSpeak was neutral when talking about various news outlets. It's kinda weird with The Rake hovering over it.
Also, to put it in Alie speak, it feels kinda like if you took Gawker and then allowed the commenters to submit short posts alongside the Gawker staff. Not saying the Rake is Gawker, I'm just listing a site with an active comments section. Would people who found a lot of stuff and linked to it be considered Gawker staff even though they're generating page views with the shit they find? Granted, outside content posts are just links and cut and paste stuff, you're still finding stuff. I was obviously fine with this under the old system but something about it now is kind of weird.
Thoughts?
Relationship status=complicated.
Wait. Who called him a tool?
"Secret Speak." That's got a nice ring to it. And it sounds sort of dirty.
LOL! My consulting fee is 10% of net.
Nobody called Marsh a tool. People called him an imposter.
And nobody has ever made fun of Marsh for having an opinion. Only for the brusk, confrontational manner he chooses to use to express it. And because it's fun to make fun of him, just like it is fun to discuss G Rote's hair helmet.
LOL! My consulting fee is 10% of net.
10 percent of the Net? Bill Gates doesn't own that much!
And because it's fun to make fun of him, just like it is fun to discuss G Rote's hair
And whether or not I'm a really a dude.
10 percent of the Net? Bill Gates doesn't own that much!
Heh, well, I was going to ask for 10% of gross, but I thought that sounded greedy.
Wait, Ang is a chick???
Ohh. em, not i. Bested by this weird HTML.
Steve was posting as "Steve Marsh (not verified)" so I was both noting that it might be an imposter and enjoying the fact that it would bug Steve if it was really him. He could just login as smarsh with his mnspeak password if he wanted to. Like Grote, either way I laugh at the idea of Steve caring about the "community" of mnspeak when he was usually irascible and contemptuous. Maybe it's just an online persona, but it's still hard to come down on the changes with the line that the new place isn't warm and fuzzy enough.
Is there a way to RSS the comments so I can follow the blathering on google reader?
Ang is as much a chick as the beautiful Taylor is.
I conditioned this morning, and I'm running my fingers through my thick luxurious salt-and-pepper shaded hair with one hand while I type this with the other. Suck it, hair haters!
And Ms. Parber?
marsh's reaction, given his clearly stated contempt for what the MNSpeak had become under Max's editorship just caught me off guard.
although I'd still rather have a beer wtih Marsh than with Kurtis.
Ms. Parber is looking younger and sexier than she did when she was 22.
Ouch.
I'll have a drink with any of all y'alls, privided you're buying.
@justinph: I did change to site-specific password for MNspeak after finding out how it was put together.
Your language doesn't really preclude plaintext storage, but I suppose there's the chance that it used an unsalted MD5/secret-key encoding, i.e. "velvet rope" security.
mean, cantankerous online smarsh can bite me.
Interesting, conversational, friendly smarsh wearing what looked to be the world's warmest sweater @ 1st Ave can have a hug.
You won;t really find that one online, Melissa.
I didn't say anyone called him a tool Max, I said if anyone thinks that. Two different things.
I'll have a drink with any of all y'alls, privided you're buying
Someone buy max a vodka martini.
It is possible that people here think Marsh is a tool.
I don't think that was a black wool sweater. did you see him from behind?
Interesting, conversational, friendly smarsh wearing what looked to be the world's warmest sweater @ 1st Ave can have a hug.
Judging by his photos, he was actually probably topless at the time.
I am curious about the moderating standards now. Are we in danger of becoming Strib / Pipress crazy town or will there still be some limits that will be enforced?
jinx...spells owes me a coke
I will still enforce limits. Lightly, as I have always done, but there will be some moderation and pruning when theings get too crazy-go-nuts.
I'm still waiting for some of these "secrets" to be revealed.
I just want to say that I like Marsh in person. He's been to my house recently. We had to vacuum after, but other than that, it was a nice visit.
There is no tenth floor in Moos Tower at the University of Minnesota. I mean, it's there. You go past it in the elevator. But there is no button for it and you can't get to it from the stairs. Nobody will tell me what's on that floor.
There. A Secret of the City.
And don't forget about Ms. Parber. She's hot too.
As soon as I can, I'm changing my login name.
Ugh. I need to refresh so I'm not making jokes 20 minutes late. Refresh the page. Well, I should refresh my jokes too.
Am I the only one that's disappointed that Marsh isn't really as big of a jerk in person? I like crabby-pants Marsh, it makes me feel like I'm a Little Miss Sunshine in comparison.
Ok, we've got a nice long list of bug fixes and interface tweaks.
What about NEW features? Whatcha want?
Whatcha whatcha whatcha whatcha want, whatcha want.
No offense to aliecat, but I believe I coined the term SecretSpeak at 9:06 a.m.
All glory goes to me.
If I am mistaken, and alie did coin it, my bad; alie I'll buy you a beer!
It feels too pretty to talk about nothing but dunkin' doughnuts, bitch about cars and nitpick over various goings around the city. Plus, it doesn't feel local.
Probably not going to waste my time anymore. Which is the only thing I'm good at doing...wasting time.
So long... It was good to know ya.
will we still be able to go back and see our posting history?
Jane is the winner... by like 3 minutes. You're a genius.
I would like to have a less-white background.
Richer user profiles.
A real calendar-- maybe where people could submit their own events. Pimp their friends and their own projects --along with the usual concerts and shows.
Not local?
Plus, it doesn't feel local.
All the other complaints must have been taken.
A real calendar-- maybe where people could submit their own events. Pimp their friends and their own projects --along with the usual concerts and shows.
That's an excellent suggestion, Jason.
Damn - it's all downhill now. Hard to imagine what the site will be like without Anonymous (not verified) and his/her crazy antics.
I am with Tara and want a way to hyperlink a word. A way for dummies to hyperlink, that is.
Also, whenever we can start posting photos, I predict I will ask for help doing that. I'm looking at you DouglasG.
On the home page, the "Popular Today" items must not include the Talk section. I think that's smart, but you might want a "Hot Talk" Or "Popular Talk Today" section. Since this post, for example, no longer lives on your home page.
Jane's right, she coined it, I just shamelessly took credit for it. Hey, I am studying for my MBA, you know...
While the all white background is killing my eyes and seems boring... I've noticed it is much more camouflaged to people walking up behind me.
DeRush just stole my calendar idea. I hate that guy.
No! Anonymous! Can you hear me? Come back! I can't live without you!
I second Jason's call for a less white background. Too bright!
Perhaps we could call it "Hot Topics." Or "Hot Pockets."
Alie and I have great minds and we think alike.
Don't tell anyone!!! It is a Secret. And anything posted on this forum legally becomes a Secret.
I love shopping at Hot Topic and eating Hot Pockets, so either works for me.
Here's one idea my dad had: CommentLuv (http://drupal.org/project/commentluv)
It's a plugin that tries to automatically link to your most recent blog post if you're a registered user with a URL.
Here's today's priority list:
- Re-design comment form. Just plain text with simple link, bold, ital buttons?
- Show info on user profile pages. Include optional demographic fields, plus bio and URL.
- Check on emails being sent from server (password requests, etc aren't being sent right now)
- Add browsing form to Events main page
- style restaurant pages
I second (or third, or fourth) Jason's social calendar idea. Smart.
I don't understand all the white hate. I like the clean, simplified layout.
I'd like some Hot Talk, too...but I prefer it not to be on the internets.
IM me, Alie.
Boy, I walked right into that one...Hee!
Matt, I liked that you had added a strikethrough option along with bold, italics and underline.
Previously, only smarty pants html-knowers could do strikethrough.
Smarty pants? That hurts! Easy Images would be nice too, so I don't have to teach Jane.
I think we should remove underline. It's only fuction is to confuse people into thinking there is a link.
Live web cams would be cool...or horrifying, I can't decide...
@matt your dad comes up with way better ideas than my dad. His latest gut buster was to wear a Hawaiian shirt and call himself Jimmy Bahamas. Awesome.
"I think we should remove underline. It's only fuction is to confuse people into thinking there is a link."
I'm confused on how to create a link. Help?
Are you kidding? Underline adds emphasis. Much like all caps. Put 'em together and it might just blow your mind.
That dude in the logo doesn't have a hat. But his shadow has a hat. Is that supposed to be the "secret"? Or is it a grey hat man who is about to pounce on him?
If you could make it look like a Word Doc or Excel file, that would be awesome for my pretending I'm not on the internet at work persona.
I do like the calendar idea. And spell check for my posts.
Speaking as someone who used to be Owen, the mascot -- sometimes he wears the hat, sometime he doesn't.
10th Floor Moos -- Zombie Containment area.
That dude in the logo is Owen. In his new version, he is a lot like old Owen, albiet a little more gay.
Oh, that wasn't a Secret in the City, was it, Owen? Oh damn! Sorry, dude...
Just kidding, Mrs. Owen!
Shhh. Keep it on the low-low, Bob.
Damn - it's all downhill now. Hard to imagine what the site will be like without Anonymous (not verified) and his/her crazy antics.
Damn...I hope it wasn't 'just sayin', or worse, 'larrycrg'.
Oh my God, we can have Larry Caig have his complete name again!
you could tone down the blue username links to a bluish gray...that would be a little nicer on the eyes
I know a gay guy named Owen. Never seen him wear a hat.
you could tone down the blue username links to a bluish gray...that would be a little nicer on the eyes
Second that. Good idea.
second the user name thing. sakes alive that bold blue is bright.
