If ever a song needed a group of U of M students to do a choral version, it was "Let's Go Crazy. " Enjoy.
What's your favorite Prince cover? What's the wost?
Gear Daddies used to do a nice cover of Little Red Corvette on occasion. That'd be my pick.
Chaka Khan.
Chaka Khan.
Chaka Khan.
I still think Sinead O'Connor did the best cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U."
Oh, and "Kiss" by Tom Jones.
Cheesy, but I like cheese.
Warren Zevon and the Hindu Love Gods doing "Raspberry Beret," and the aforementioned Gear Daddies cover.
The Tom Jones version of "Kiss" is the best.
The worst? My version of the same song.
Mitch Ryder's cover of When You Were Mine . I really wish Prince would allow his stuff on Youtube.
I once saw Tom Jones perform "Kiss" at an outdoor rock'n'roll fest in Chippewa Falls ca. 1992. (David Clayton-Thomas was also on the bill.) Tom has the moves and, yes, a pantie or two were flung Tom's way & did find their way to the stage ... in broad daylight! I did not dare to look, however, given his popularity among a certain demo. That, and I was married at the time.
I like Semisonic's cover of Erotic City.
I interviewed Dan Wilson from Semisonic years ago, and the interview was something of a non-started, as sometimes interviews are, even after I reminded him that he and Dan Wilson used to babysit me back in St. Louis Park. But then we got onto the topic of Prince, and the interview took off.
Dan Wilson has a lot to say about Prince.
Second the Sinead O'Conner and Hindu Love God covers.
I Have a CD by Bob Belden "When Doves Cry" that has a dozen or so jazz covers.
It has one of the best versions of "When Doves Cry" with Cassandra Wilson.
The U of Maryland a capella group Faux Paz did a great cover of When Doves Cry.
Martin Sexton does an amazing "Purple Rain."
I just wish someone would cover Prince's only good song, Batdance.
Cindy Lauper's version of "When You Were Mine". So good.
Anonymous...get the funk out.
Bangles: Manic Monday.
'Nuff said.
NBC has a project tentatively slated for either the summer or fall season called The Sing-Off -- an a capella version of American Idol.
If you like a capella doo-wop (what other kind is there?), I highly recommend anything by The Persuasions. They go back to the dawning of doo-wop.
I love cover songs. A bunch of bands do great covers of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man". I've heard it done by The Eels, Pinhead Circus, My Morning Jacket and the Goo Goo Dolls.
But I just discovered this live version by our very own Mats.
That link was messed up. This is better:
