Apparantly, Hiawatha Joe's is available for whoever wants it, if it hasn't been snapped up already. (Via Alexis on Twitter.) Anybody know what's going on here?
I drive by Hiawatha Joe's all the time. It is unfortunately situated right next to a McDonald's. Perhaps this is why they went out of business? I only went in there once, to get a cup of coffee. The place was disorganized and the person behind the counter didn't seem to really understand when I ordered a latte.
There is now a cookie shop next to Hiawatha Joe's. I have seen a sign posted that advertises "Free Cookie today!"
What's the property tax like down there?
I used to frequent there in the mornings for coffee and breakfast.
He was a nice guy, and those sausage breakfast sandwiches were quite good.
But I think the guy running the place wasn't quite sure what niche to fill. He had his hands in the pizza biz, breakfast sandwiches, delivery, etc.
Had he refined his message/atmosphere/purpose a bit more, I think he could have done ok even with no access for southbound traffic...
Plus you are right, the interior was shabby, and randomly decorated.
Looks like close to 24 grand in property taxes..
.Aha!....
"Property has prior year delinquent taxes. Call (612) 348-3011 for amount due."
In a pinch I once stopped into Hiawatha Joe's to use their wireless. The place smelled like greasy food and the seating area reminded me of a doctor's office waiting room with tables. It was very odd, but not without potential. It did not seem like a coffee shop...it was very random and weird.
This summer my friend and I were headed out to Deluth and wanted a cup of coffed on an early, cool Saturday morning, Hiawatha was right on our way so we stopped. Bafflingly, their sign stated that they didn't open till 10am on Saturdays. WTF? We went to Blue Moon coffee instead.
Er...Duluth...
Exactly, Alie, He apparently tried to market it as a coffee shop but was way off....especially since we was just selling Dunn Bros. coffee.
P.S. Blue Moon was awesome and I wish I was out there more often...cute little shop.
I ordered from there all the time... good food but I do admit the decor of the place was non existent. The mash-up of coffee, pizza, ice cream etc... was a little confusing. I for one have missed it!
The business is up for grabs (name, equipment, etc.) not the property, but if the owners of both are currently the same, I suppose it's the commercial equivalent of a homeowner begging for renters to avoid foreclosure. I'm sure the lease being offered has severe penalties for bailing out prior to its expiration.
Max, you should open up a topless coffee shop!
