I contributed nothing to the City Pages music section over the past year, so it was very satisfying to accept the community's acknowledgement of our efforts.

Oh, man, I had so much fun at the MMAs last year. I called Lori Barghini a MILF on stage.

The Doomtree performance was the highlight for me. It sucked that everyone left and missed it. The cool thing about them is that they didn't even care how many people were watching, they still put on an AWESOME set.

I missed the Doomtree set because it was at the same time as Alarmists / White Light Riot / God Damn Doo Wop Band in the Entry. WTF, FIRST AVE?!

For starters, it's an MMA production AT First Avenue. The club doesn't necessarily call the shots on time slots. Someone did a great job getting Entry bands up and down quick and clean. A house drum kit helps.
Secondly, I remember (and was more involved) back in the days when new bands played full sets all night in the Entry throughout Awards night and this scheme is a big improvement. It helps keep the audience sitting tight, and better focused on the unexpected stuff that might jump off at the main stage. (Lucia and Oake were quick-witted as usual, and some of the guest presenters killed.) Also, last night, I saw all the new buzz bands in rapid fire from about 10:30 to 1. (30 minute sets should be the NEXT clubland legal decree, but that's just me.) Yes, it made it hard to lock down on all the Doomtree come and go, but I still prefer this way. Local music gawkers might wanna see as many things as possible in a night like last night.

At risk of imbedding a subthread within a thread, let's get back to your gal Sarah. I gotta be honest. As a former CP columnist, to see her walk up and accept the award at all, and then so glibly, was a little startling. I ask the Mnspeak faithful -- all 19 of you -- why might Sarah make a good music editor for the paper, arguably the paper of record about local records? Her Mnspeak archive was quite light on music content, which doesn't make her all bad. But the recent trainwreck of a feature on Jeremy Messersmith by the usually trusty and amusing Dylan Hicks' really really needed an editor. Music and editing are two things I look for in a music editor, but that's just me. They say there is a little truth in every sarcastic joke. Was she even joking, and who is it on? Based on last night, I'm guessing the response might be that she'll bring a fresh new irreverance to local music coverage. That's fine, if you think (local) music coverage had been a little too serious lately. I don't, but that's not her fault.

Isn't "A Kid of Who Tells on Another Kid is a Dead Kid" a Nation of Ulysses song? Indie cred for that kid, I love the Nation.
