Jaded Little Love Song - Terramara
Great post.
If there's an artist missing, who? If they picked the wrong song by a listed artist, which would you have chosen?
I definately would have picked different Soul Asylum, Prince, & Replacements songs. Where is Arcwelder? I know they are on iTunes. As are The Hang Ups and The Owls.
Halloween, Alaska should be on there too.
"Crush On You". Not that I would know...
... and I just put in a Semisonic CD thanks to this post.
The Suburbs (Love is the Law) are missing. And weren't the Fine Young Cannibals (She Drives Me Crazy, Good Thing) produced here? Does that count?
I fucking hate Lipps Inc.
Wait, the suburbs are there.
no 12rods? i'm shocked
> "Crush On You". Not that I would know...
And then there's the band Crush On You, who used to live in the Colonial Warehouse. Back when only hipsters hung out at First Ave.
Not that they should be on the list. (Well, I've never heard them...)
How about Scottish Rite Temple Stomp, by Ninian Hawick?
how 'bout some Vicious Vicious?
Who compiled the list? Is is a colllaborative/public effort? Does every city have an Essentials list?
I agree about Arcwelder.
Semisonic is there, which is all that matters.
I don't see why muthafuckin' HARMAR SUPA STAR has to be dropped down to a 'deep cut'. Shit is def a basic.
Tapes n Tapes? Are they on iTunes yet?
Also, Okkervil River's Will Sheff?
Solo Hart and Mould, but no Husker Du???? And I love Low, but they're Duluth/Minnesota essentials, NOT Minneapolis.
Yeah, where's the Husker Du?
I love Space Humping $19.99, that song rules. LFTR PLLR FOREVA!
Where is the LIMITED WARRANTY?!?!?!
Okay, nevermind.... But what about Brother Ali? P.O.S.? Kid Dakota?
Husker Du is not on the iTunes yet, but other SST stuff is. I think it has to do with the paralysis caused by the members not getting along.
From the mid-90s: Arcwelder and Walt Mink
From the late-80s: The Magnolias.
Take the Rembrants off. They are not really from here. IF you are going to have the Rembrants, you might as well have Marcy Playground. Same with the Information Society.
Kurt Harland is from here so InSoc is valid. Cows and Halo of Flies are both available on iTunes.
Atmosphere, Lifter Puller and Michael Yonkers should all be Essential, Walt Mink should definitely be on there, and something--ANYTHING--from AmRep should be on there somewhere (I vote for Hammerhead and the Cows).
For Motion City Soundtrack I would have choosen Better Open the Door (track 9 on thier latest album). Its a great track and it makes mention of some local spots including Lyndale Ave, the CC Club, and the Triple Rock.
Balloon Guy was the coolest Minneapolis band of the '90s. Something from "West Coast Shakes" should be on there.
I agree with Chuck. Where are the AMREP bands? Cows rule!
Michael Yonkers!! Yaaay!!!
Are AMREP bands on iTunes? I'd be surprised if they are, but it would be cool.
Minneapolis garage, man, of which this list is prepsoterously light. Starters:
1. The UFO -- Dudley and the Doo Rites
2. The Crusher -- The Novas
3. The Baldie Stomp -- The Deacons
4. Action Woman -- The Electras
5. Fat girl -- Emebermen
6. Old Mo William -- Gregory Dee And The Avanties
7. Baba Yago -- The Pagans
8. The Log -- The Uglies
And assorted Trashmen and Castaways.
this is going to be a long thread...
"what about (insert any friggin' local band that's ever existed that you like or are in)??" ad naseum.
carry on.
Though it's by Westerberg, "Dyslexic Heart" is the trademark song for "Singles," a film all about... um... Seattle.
The Babes In Toyland song should be "Spit to See the Shine." The Suburbs' "Goggles On" should be in there... also "Snow Days" by Trip Shakespeare - what song is more fitting for Minnesota than one about the joy of taking a snow day.... great to see Mallman on the list, I'd throw in a couple more of his songs too.
Glaring omissions (unless they were on the list & I overlooked it):
Brother Ali
Sims
Run Westy Run
Magnolias
The Cows (esp. "Uptown Suckers")
Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs
Tulip Sweet & Her Trail of Tears
The Swingin' Teens
The Funseekers
The Blue Up?
Hey, vampkate - what would be wrong with that? I'd love to see everyone list their favorites...
I just realized I've got a lot of The Basics on vinyl, for god's sake. I am really old.
way to go, hipmn nice list.... "The Crusher" rules! It's an awesome song about the old wrestler.
How 'bout John Kay & Steppenwolf "Born to be Wild"?
Almost the entire AmRep catalog is on iTunes.
henry - not anything entirely wrong. it's just going to be long. when you talk about "essentials" everyone's got their idea of what matters and what doesn't. it's impossible to make a list that everyone's happy with. opinions are like cowboy hats... every asshole's got one. ;)
I've got a long list of what I think should be on there, but it just seems like that list focuses pretty heavily on the local scene 10 or more years ago, without much nod to the scene in the last five.
But to answer the Vicious Vicious question -- not on iTunes.
richg - post all the new music favorites you wish to, us old-timers would love to see 'em.
I'd have thought for sure they'd pick "My Blue Door" from the Honeydogs.
how about?.....
Paradox
Regime
Fabulous MN Barking Ducks
Slave Raider
Rockin' Hollywoods
The White Sidewalls
Chameleon
Is my last 10 yearsness, or was 12 Rods a fairly important band? Also, Trip Shakespeare's "Drummer Like Me" was nearly anthemic for the older city girl I had a crush on. Matt and John are due independent credit somehow someway. Lastly, File Under can we claim Sugar?
i love this town!
this list should try not repeating so many artists and add some of the others. freaking Arcwelder, Walt Mink, 12 Rods for sure. all-time favorite bands for me and my kindred.
How about the Suicide Commandos?
I think Hammerhead and Vaz qualify for the deep cuts, though I don't think I've ever heard any of it on the radio. Cheers to Cows though.
Also, any votes for up-and-comers Hockey Night?
DeepCuts... Vol. 2?
Gotta think that Dylan Hicks should be on there.
That's the problem with Mpls/St. Paul. So many bands, so little time...
A nice problem to have, tho
The Strike "Shots Heard 'Round the World"
Even though they did the smart thing and moved to Chicago they still count as minneapolitan in my book.
Thank you. The Strike rulez, okay.
Ipso Facto.
Boiled in Lead
Willie Murphy
The Hoopsnakes
Who the hell is Prince...?
I'm sure I'll be totally unhipster for adding Edgar Meyer and Giovanni Bottesini Concertos for Cello with Yo Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra but I don't care.
It's a great recording showing the experimental and interesting work that SPCO delivers.
Isn't it time somebody released Augie Garcia on CD? I mean, the man stole the stage from Elvis.
Next we need a St. Paul Essentials list. ;-)
The Leatherwoods
Draghounds
Picadors
Rank Strangers
John Eller and the DT's
Eller / Lynch
The Sycamores
Calib Palmiter
Five Easy Pieces
Kraig Johnson
So much great music has come out of this town, it's great see that the iTunes Music Store has the section and Minneapolis is in it. Too bad it is so difficult to navigate to. Does anyone know how easy it is for local bands or indie labels to get there stuff on iTunes?
peace
The Draghounds "Shameless"
I second this nomination. "Angel Boots" is one of my favorite Minneapolis albums of all time.
Also, for the Soul Asylum . . . you've got to get something pre-"Gravedancers" in there, at least in the deep cuts section. How about "Closer to the Stars"?
What about Dare Force?
Crow - No mention of Crow! How old are you anyway - Certainly not old enough to remember the local band who made four albums. Ever hear of "Evil Woman don't play your games with me'? Ever see them on tour with Janis Joplin, Hendrix, or Clapton? I did. I can't believe you missed them. Nice try...
Dare Force, Obsession, Paradox, Impaler, Hericane Alice, etc
Where's "What Kind Of Man Would I Be" by Mint Condition? I see "U Send Me Swingin' & Pretty Brown Eyes" but "What Kind Of Man Would I Be" is their most successful single of their carrers. It went Platinum off their Gold Album "Definition of a Band" in 96. Also 777-9311 by the Time.
If anyone knows where to get any Little Augie Garcia records, please email me at mctoy@earthlink.net.
His Hi Yo Silver still rings in my head from 1957.
