Twin Cities the friendliest place to quit smoking? Well, I guess...

The folks who did the ranking are right that there are many more resources, workshops, phone lines, etc. to help Minnesotans quit than when I quit years ago. Right now, a little more than 20 percent of adult Minnesotans smoke, according to the CDC (the state health department estimate is a little lower, but in the ballpark). It will be interesting to see if these numbers drop after the next statewide health survey.

Adult smoking rates usually drops after workplace bans begin, or the price of tobacco goes up. Both of these things have happened in Minnesota this year.

Kudos to PiPress writers Jason Hoppin & MaryJo Sylwester for their page one story today, "Smoking ban fears prove unfounded."

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. I'm from New York. No one touches when walking. Even in crowds people know how to walk around each other without bumping or touching.
I applaud the ettiquette, but it does bring up a larger issue. While "the Skyway is not the highway," everyone sure treats it that way, and as Minnesotans cannot really drive, I think we found the real problem.

Another skyway don't: stopping. Get where you're going, people!

the about.com article lists general etiquette that applied anywhere. and for the most part skyways are exactly the same as a highway. one thing the article skips over is that the skyway system is not public space, and if you don't look like you belong there you will be promptly kicked out.

ironic, they may not touch, but NYCers have much much smaller personal space bubble than Minnesotans. Also, Minnesotans are, for the most part, average drivers comparatively speaking. Can't merge and won't move to the right, but otherwise fairly predictable -- the same as in the skyways.

I'd like to see some discussion of escalator etiquette involving two peculiar specimens of Minnesotans.

First, I would like advice on how to politely interact with people who (a) are apparently unable or unwilling to walk up or down steps, and thus wait to be escalated; and (b) are unable or unwilling to shift their mass to the right so those of us who are not yet morbidly obese might attempt to pass them.

Second, I would like to gain understanding, if not empathy, for people who appear to be suffering from some sort of escalator anxiety, and therefore either freeze up or take lots of little baby steps before embarking on or disembarking from their escalated voyage.

I love the good people of Minnesota, but a lot of us seem to have difficulty moving at a steady rate.

mike, I too find it funny that perfectly capable people take an escalator up a floor when there are stairs right next to it -- not to mention taking the same escalator down. But as anyone who as grown up with Geraldo and Inside Edition knows, the anxiety comes from knowing that at any second one's shoe lace could become stuck in the jaws of the machine and the user sucked in and chopped into a zillion bloody pieces.

And as far as being aware of others, once we make it on to the machines, we are immediately entranced, ready to follow wherever the machine takes us, much like cattle on conveyor belts waiting for stun guns to the forehead . . .

There is no Naughty Entertainment, Inc registered with the State of Minnesota.

There is a Naughty Kitten corporation. haha

Once I saw a guy in the City Center drop some clothing and hangers at the bottom of the escalator. They got sucked into the escalator and jammed the thing up instantly.

Isn't it sad that people will gladly sacrifice 10 seconds of their lives in order to avoid expending any energy on the escalator, but once on the highway, people will risk life and limb in order to regain those 10 seconds?

So now this whole thing about Americans being fat is part of the vast left wing conspiracy, too? That's hilarious.

Actually, I mean that in a non-critical way -- it's, just. Hilarious.

Why did "imagreen" in a previous post say that we (U.S. citizens, I presume) make up the fattest country in the world?

Unfortunately it's true although Mexico looks set to surpass the obesity rate of the US next year.

I saw a documentary a few years ago or maybe it was in Fast Food Nation basically blaming Nixon for the current obesity of Americans. It had to do with farm policy and they way farmers were reimbursed for thier stored corn. The change in policy made it more cost effective and porifitable for farmers to convert their crops to corn syrup than to store it or ship it as a grain. This knocked the bottom out of the corn syrup market and dropped the price of Sugary Soda.

Not sure if I believe it, be it does correlate in timing with the obesity rise in the USA.

There's a direct inverse correlation between obesity and the legalization of abortion.

(That's a joke! For you Freakonomicals out there....)
