Dude Weather Subscribe to Secrets Minneapolis / St. Paul
Star Tribune: Pawlenty watch is over. McCain taps some chick from Alaska.
Washingtonian: Minor victory for Bachmann -- she's only 2nd most clueless in the House
MN Independent: This election brought to you by the letters A, T, and T
Defenestrator: The Clintons become one with the Force
Palin=mayor a suburb, gov of a state with less people than Montana = 44 years old = less experience than Barry=McCain's experience arguments are shite, especially if he gets sick and kicks the bucket and then we're left with someone who oversees a government barely bigger than Minneapolis to deal with problems in the Middle East, with Russia, with the economy, with healthcare, etc. etc.
There are some Sweet Tweets on Palin from the usual suspects.
I don't get the strategy behind this pick at all. Do they really think they'll get Hillary's supporters just because Palin is a woman?
@tara_r
considering the intellectual depth of many hillary supporters - I would say yes.
FOX news is claiming that Palin DOES have foreign policy experience, because ALASKA IS NEXT TO RUSSIA.
But they've already chosen to vote McCain.
She seems like a wonderful human being...her story sounds like she's Alaska's Dudley-Do-Right. But 2 years as Governor of Alaska doesn't seem to qualify as material for one heartbeat away from the White House.
So, the Republicans have apparently chosen a married woman with a very thin resume to run as VP. Dennis Tester has to be suicidal right now. I guarantee if he weighs in, he will simply devalue the office of VP.
I like the fact that Palin was (is?) a "hockey mom", but not sure about her choice of the phrase "snow machine" in place of snowmobile.

Care tp elaborate on this, yoshi?
I kinda miss Maz. He provides a splash of dirty to the Martini of mnspeak.
heh. Typical liberal drunk. Whatsa matter, Hippy, run out of pot?
(Bob, Channeling maz for kurtis)

I think it's this: Want a woman President? Here you go. Probably within 2 1/2 years.

Would Dudley-Do-Right have fired his Public Safety Commish for refusing to fire her soon to be ex-brother-in-law?

grote, ftw.
Snow machine? As in "your snow's got a little machine?"
Jesus, all I can think about today is '70s sitcoms and rock music. Nobody let me near any bloggin platforms today. I might write a heroic salute to "Pinky Lady and Jeff" or something, and then everyone's Friday is ruined.
I don't get it. I guess I lack intellectual depth.
Insight from James Fallows re: Palin:
"The Palin pick is not like the choice of Dan Quayle ... But it is exactly like the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. That is, an unbelievably obvious but potentially effective attempt to jiu-jitsu the standard identity politics of the moment in a way that flummoxes the Democrats."
Re: snow machine
"Snowmobile" is a suburban term. Old-timers in the Arctic still probably call them sno-cats or something. "Snow machine" is acceptable IMHO.
Remember our regional linguistic differences. Fry pan = skillet.
No biggie in my book.
Ooh, Dan Quayle....good reference. I notice Palin did say "nucular," like GWB. Not too far removed from 'potatoe,' if you ask me.
Money comment from Wonkette: Has anyone else noticed, BTW, that Palin is Governor of a state thats younger than McCain?
but not sure about her choice of the phrase "snow machine" in place of snowmobile.
Ha! We went from "Oh sweet a snowmobile champion husband will kill in Minnesota" to "Oh crap, we just lost Minnesota again." Kidding of course.
I liken the pick to a coach who chooses to go for two at the end of the game instead of kicking the extra point for a tie. If he wins he's a genuis and if he loses he'll get second guessed forever. I wonder how it will show up in the polls. Biden was a relatively within-the-box pick and that didn't seem to cause any great movement. This being more of a curve ball may generate different reaction. Of course we may not be able to really tell with it occuring right after the Obama convention. It could bring down a post-DNC bump or negate it completely. If he actually shows up ahead between now and Thursday then he would definitely have a receiver open in the back of the endzone. But if he tanks then he's fumbled the snap.
Do they really think they'll get Hillary's supporters just because Palin is a woman?
I guess so but wtf. She is against abortion, would support a supreme court that a Hillary support would burn flags over and it from Alaska? wow, I like McCain but the wheels are wobbling on this one. The only good thing is that when McCain wins Melcow will not be governor.
One more thing: this was a bit of a F-U pick, a personal, totally idiosyncratic, gut-level, aggressive piece of opportunism. Yes he can! And yes, it does underline his maverick, out-of-the-box brand. It makes me like his empathy for gutsy young women, even former beauty queens (is there footage of her contest out there?). But it also makes me less comfortable with the idea of him as commander in chief. It seems a less steady choice than Biden.
He also makes the Harriet Miers comparison:
"...the point at which people suddenly realize that McCain is actually less interested in governing than in politics. And willing to let personal liking and respect for utterly unqualified people trump the sober responsibilities of running a country at war, a climate in flux, an economy in trouble, and an empire close to imploding."
kwatt, this seems more like a last second hail mary to the end zone. Unfortunately, he's got Muggsy Bogues rather than Randy Moss in the end zone.
From what I've been reading, the air is already leaking out of this one, and will probably be flat before the RNC opens.
Would Dudley-Do-Right have fired his Public Safety Commish for refusing to fire her soon to be ex-brother-in-law?
I don't think this inquiry will hold much water. The soon to be ex supposedly threatened to kill her sister and actually tased their 11 year old son.
"Don't tase me dad"
And willing to let personal liking and respect for utterly unqualified people trump the sober responsibilities of running a country at war, a climate in flux, an economy in trouble, and an empire close to imploding.
Interesting how the tickets are sort of inverted mirror images of each other now. One has inexperienced likability at the top and long-time Senate expertise on the bottom, the other just the opposite.

And allegedly was drinking while driving his cruiser.
Of course, two wrongs don't make a right, but her "ethics violation" is considerably less than his. Allegedly.

It is a long way to the election. The polls are tight. The VP does not decide the out come. Bush won with Dan Q, remember.
Really? I'd like to see what you've been reading that shows Obama is a kneel-down away from wrapping up the election.
This confirmed by a co-worker who hails from Alaska: They do really call them snow machines. How uncreative and vague.
WE INVENTED snowmobiles! They should call them what we call them!
Although, now that I think about it, snowmobile isn't that much more creative that snow machine. We might as well have called it a snowgoingthingy.

Good point, Both parties seem to be dumbing it down a bit. Has anyone heard anything about policy, what we are going to do with issues like, the war, Russia, the economic pre-depression ect. ect.. Oh, I forgot, last night Oboma said he would find inefficiencies in the federal budget and tax the top 5% more. That is a unique policy shift. No one has ever tried that before. Let's just whistle by the grave yard, pass the whiskey. When do we vote.

Here here!
Electric sleigh?
Ron Fournier, Andrew Sullivan, James Fallows, for starters. If this were a Broadway show, it would be closing tomorrow night.
Swandog, you're confusing Obama with Dukakis, and Bentson with Biden. I realize the (D) after their names might be a little confusing, but try to get into the present.
Really? I'd like to see what you've been reading that shows Obama is a kneel-down away from wrapping up the election.

And one party dumbed it down a metric ass-ton
God, I cannot wait to see the Biden/Palin debate. I'm beyond myself with excitement.
Electric sleigh?
Most run on gas.
How about Horseless Sleigh?
Nothing could top the "You're no Jack Kennedy" VP debate, bix.
God, I cannot wait to see the Biden/Palin debate. I'm beyond myself with excitement.
You mean the one with the charismatic newcomer against the old white Senator? Yeah, that's gonna be a doosie.

Really, you're citing the average lead of less than 4 percent including a post-convention bounce as proof that it's nearly over. Dear, dear child.
Wait, wasn't the debate with Stockdale a good one? I seem to recall hearing he said something like "I wasn't listening so I didn't hear the question, but I'm sure I agree with what (Quayle or whoever) said."
Didn't he also say "Who am I? What am I doing here?"
Bob you're going to have to reference something we were actually alive for.
Geezer. Trying to play on the kids' Internet.
Whoa, Palin's kids have the best names I've ever heard: Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.
Get off my lawn, you damned kid!
The RCP poll average has Obama ahead of McCain consistently, dating back to 2007.
Didn't he also say "Who am I? What am I doing here?"
Yeah, but it was more like a "you're probably wondering" rhetorical statement, and made perfect sense.
Kevin, what are your hopes for a McCain/Palin white house?

I cry age discrimination.
Willow and Piper I can see. Track, Bristol and Trig? Did she choose her children's name with a game of Boggle?
God, I cannot wait to see the Biden/Palin debate. I'm beyond myself with excitement.

You obviously didn't pay attention to the early Democratic Primary debates.

Post convention bounce wouldn't show up for another day or so kevin, and obviously, today's GOP announcement is going to cloud that.
I can't wait to see the McCain Obama debate. Isn't there at least a 1' difference in height? McCain is going to look like a pale shaved Bilbo Baggins. Let's hope he wears shoes.
But nothin' tops the Muskie-Agnew debate, right Bob?
Let's hope he wears shoes.
Sorry, he's wearing flip flops now.
He's going after the Jimmy Buffet fan demographic.
I'll get off your lawn when you get out of my intertubes!
Kevin, what are your hopes for a McCain/Palin white house?
About the same as the Twins winning the central division. There's a chance, they're in it for sure. They have small ground to make up, but the capability to do so. We'll see. Long way to go.
Dougie, he'd have to break into the Kiss costume closet to make any difference. He might as well stick with his $500 Italian made loafers.
I meant, what do you hope will happen if they do win?
Probably the same as the Twins:
Shut off the old brain, get drunk and watch guys who aren't real intelligent get rich with their buddies while taxpayers throw money at the whole misguided venture.
Post convention bounce wouldn't show up for another day or so kevin, and obviously, today's GOP announcement is going to cloud that.
The latest Gallup was Tuesday thru last night. Yes, once the full round of polling after the most watched convention speech ever is in that will have an effect (or affect? no, I'm pretty sure it's effect). But that's something that should be built in to the price of the stock at this point when talking about the race big-picture. Keeping with the stock market terms, I would say a realistic analyst would have to expect Obama to come thru the conventions getting a bigger bump than McCain (what are these guys, pregnant? bumps) and be somewhere around a 5-point lead 10 days from now. Anything else either way would signal momentum.
Also I would advise holding your Pawlenty for the near term as he still figures to be a player post-2010; but if you were holding onto your Romney these last few months get out, get out NOW. This one is sinking fast, grab a lifeboat while you still can.
Oh. Since they'll probably have to deal with a Democrat Congress I'd hope John talks to his good buddy Tim about how to effectively wield the veto pen. And that the outgoing president introduces the vice president to his friends Misty and Kerri.

Oboma's stock has peaked. Not everyone buys into a rock concert as a reason to vote for Oboma. He has his hard core supports and they have made up their minds, the independents are still on the fence and they are going to be the ones to determine the outcome of the election.
Furthermore, Oboma looks good against a democratic Challenger but he has never run against a republican. He is a machine politician that rallies the party fateful but not everyone drinks the same color cool aid.
Who the hell is Oboma?
I wouldn't say he's peaked. There's plenty of room for both candidates stock to increase in value over the next two+ months.
...but he has never run against a republican.
Sure he has. He was leading against Jack Ryan even before it came out that Ryan made his wife Jeri have sex with him a la "Eyes wide Open." Then, he trounced Alan Keyes.
...but he has never run against a republican.
That would require him to be partisan, and if there's one thing Barack Obama doesn't do...oh shit.
Sure he has. He was leading against Jack Ryan even before it came out that Ryan made his wife Jeri have sex with him a la "Eyes wide Open." Then, he trounced Alan Keyes.
If you call that running against a republican. That was a lucky hand he was dealt. That hardly constitutes a campaign against a republican, if the republican drops out and the second string team plays the last two minutes of the game. But yes technically he has run against a republican, sort of.
I'm sure McCain and his advisors have no illusions that she is the most qualified person for the job; this selection is obviously an attempt to appeal to both ersatz Hilary supporters and the religious base of the Republican party. Analysts on the left and the right can agree on this. It could work brilliantly or it could blow up in their faces. It's too early to tell.
But this is what troubles me... I know it's off-message for the Obama campaign to question a candidate's motives, but the McCain camp is clearly putting their ambitions against the country's interests. Here's a 72 year old man with a repeated history of cancer, and he chooses this clearly unqualified person to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency, from Commander in Chief? Just to win an election? After his disingenuous, misleading claims that Obama would "rather lose a war than a campaign"? It's mind boggling.
Can't hardly wait. But if anyone hears tell of any competitive intelligence/business researcher posts overseas do let me know, as I love to hedge my bets. Ownership society/everyman for himself and all...
