Reducing emissions is hard. But as JFK said about going to the moon:

Maybe we wouldn't be in this mess if JFK had focused on reducing emissions rather than going to the moon. Sure the Russians would have all the moon rocks and whatever else we got out of that deal, but we wouldn't have a giant fricking hole in the ozone layer to deal with.

I think the point was that the RNC committee is talking about using a lot of tech to involve the public in the RNC, but we aren't seeing a whole lot of results yet.

Well if they talk it, it makes sense, but if they actually invest the money and do it, it seems like a colossal waste of money. The core of independent voters mostly rely upon traditional media than new and emerging media.

I think there are any number of people, myself included, who would argue that last point with you. But regardless, the conventions are colossal wastes of money. Period. It has been decades since anything of substance occurred at a national political convention. Luckily, MSP gets to reap the benefits of this one, so it's not all bad.

It's my understanding that cities hosting political conventions lose money.

It's highly dependent on the structure of the city and how well it's planned. That said -- Boston, the example used in the article you linked to, actually still netted about 15 million after costs were factored in. And that was before offsetting donations and funds were applied. Boston was poorly planned as well. Assuming MSP manages to avoid shutting down its main transportation arteries, we ought to stay nicely in the black.

hi, I have to jump in here in boston's defense (kinda)

well, actually, rather than being poorly-planned, large portions of the city simply weren't planned. Notable exceptions are back bay and other landfill areas of town (as well as its lovely park system). Really, though, the downtown area where the convention was held is a giant hodge-podge with so many layers of development/infrastructure built on top of one another that of course it looks like a mess.

but a beautiful mess!

besides, we don't even need a national political convention to bring the TC metro area all sorts of transportation woes. we have a cruddy underfunded public transit system, I'm pretty sure almost every part of 35W through the metro is under some sort of construction right now (not to mention a lot of stuff going on on 35E and other highways lately), and, well, traffic doesn't even flow that well without the construction.
(ps, before you even start in, no, I will not "go back to boston," because I quite enjoy living here and want to help improve things--but the first stage of that is identifying problems and bitching about them until everyone is pissed enough to force the government to spend some money).

Wasn't it not too long ago, that you were saying you were out of here as soon as you put in enough chits to move on up in the corporate world (or on to grad school)?

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem if you've decided that this would be a fine place to make your home, I'm just asking if this isn't a change in position/attitude.

You make my point for me, Wayno. Boston just ain't a good place to hold this sort of event. Now, I'll grant you that MSP has some serious transit issues, but I think it'll weather the storm slightly better, especially being in Saint Paul, than Boston did.

And certainly more profitably.

The originals were fiberglass, but we also have permanent bronzes. For confirmation of this fact, there is no better source than the Salt Lake City Deseret News.
