Dude Weather Subscribe to Secrets Minneapolis / St. Paul
The Great Commuter Challenge is being held this morning. It's a race between a guy in a car (the ironiclly named Strib reporter John Foti), RT "Leadfoot" Rybak on bicycle and Ramsey County Commissioner Toni Carter on foot. Without peeking at the results, who do you think will win?
Hmm. My spelling is ironic, as well.
To do this properly, you have to have Jeremy Clarkson drive a speed boat up the Mississippi.

SPOILER ALERT: We have a winner.
BOOYAH RT!
Totally need a boat on the Mississippi in this race!
Unaware of Bike Week, I biked today. Does anyone else cycle in from the west on the Cedar Lake Trail? Have you noticed the tiny little section, just west of Brownie Lake, where you can hear hundreds of frogs? It is so cool!
Yeah for jane and you other bike-loving MNspeakers. No doubt some will suggest the contest was rigged 'cause the dude in the car came in last.
earth-haters.
As you know, mass transit use is up in the Twin Cities. A lot of other cities are seeing big increases too, sez the New York Times.
Second-place finisher's Toni Carter's bus was running on biodiesel. So will all the rest of the diesel users in Minnesota, thanks to a bill that Pawlenty just signed.
I was assuming Foti lost because he's a blogger, probably got lost because he doesn't get out of the house much, and had three accidents while Twittering and driving.
As a recent graduate to bike commuting, there's no question that it's the most efficient travel method available. Cars are not.
Which one is Brownie Lake?
I don't commute that route, but Cedar lake trail, and the mid-town are on my list of regular rides.
I've never heard frogs though.
Those baskets on the back of the Mayor's bike don't look very aerodynamic, do they?
Private Note to Hizhoner: Next year, take off the helmet before the news conference, eh?
I've never heard frogs though
These are captioned frogs, my friend. Besides, how do you say "ribbit" in ASL?
Brownie Lake is a secret lake; you either know where it is or you don't. You can't see it from Cedar Lake Trail unless you know where it is. You can only get to it by canoe, via a secret tunnel. I'm actually not kidding!
So anyway, the frogs are in a large puddle, basically a mini swamp, that is all reedy, but very small, like 8 feet by 25 feet. It runs right along the trail, and it is west of Cedar Lake by maybe 1/4 mile. I suspect the frogs only ribbit in the mornings; I'll see if they are ribbitting on my way home this afternoon.
I bike, bus and drive from SLP to DT, and some how door-to-door, each one takes about the same amount of time.
So, Jane, it sounds like that's the lake people should run and go naked to now that Hidden Beach has gone family-friendly.
MNSpeak Get Together!
Wait, is it on the north side of the trail where there's that bridge over the "creek" just west of the Cedar Lake over pass? I don't remember if you can you see it from Cedar Lake Parkway (I do that a lot too, if I bike down Victory/Wirth to the trail).
Here a link to a photo of the secret tral to hidden Brownie Lake.
Looks inviting, eh? Can't you just see it scattered with shoes and clothing?
According to this article, Brownie Lake is fun in the winter, too!
These are captioned frogs, my friend.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Kermit.
I wonder if it's scattered with the shoes and clothing of Target Corporate Credit department heads. Google Maps shows that the Target Credit operations oversee the lake.
Now that they've off-loaded collections, I'm betting Target will put that nice chunk of real estate up for sale once the market rebounds.

I bike that route everyday jane. I wonder if we've passed each other. Like two bikes on a path...
I know the frog pool you're talking about. I usually listen to music on my path portion of the commute (but not downtown). The other day my battery was out, so I was biking along and was struck by the sound. It is remarkable.
In my own commuter challenge, for me to get from 394/100 to Nordeast, it's the following:
Car: 20 minutes
Bus: 35
Biking: 25
But biking is completely Zen whereas the commute by car makes me insane. I've gotten to the point where sitting in traffic really makes me go out of my mind.
BTW - Brownie is also a hidden spot for crappies and bass...
This trail (right next to the JCC) will take you directly to Brownie Lake.
Nateek, I ride a gold GT with black panniers, and am going to DT usually between 7:30 and 8:00 am, returning between 4:30 and 5:00.
I strongly encourage you to not listen to headphones. The birds in the morning are amazing, and the wind, etc. really adds to the whole getting- out-in-nature-before-work-grind thing. You know, the best revenge is living well.
Coolio jane.
I'm on this. I'll look out for you.
I'm rarely out the door as early as you, but our evening commute sounds about the same. Wait. How does that work?
I hear you about the music vs. nature thing. But for me, birds primarily remind me of being woken up at 4:45 by said birds. Therefore, a nice long Phish tune or some gut throbbing Radiohead are tough to beat!
But... but... that bike doesn't have pedals! You must be one hell of a cyclist! I'm a wimp and need pedals. Clip-in pedals, no less.
jane, I have two GTs myself.
Biking is way quicker for me because of the parking situation on campus. Biking along river road is nice this time of year, it smells like a sewer. Ah nature!
I wonder how many guys who bike their way to work smell like a boxer when they sit down in their cube?
I happen to have access to a locker room.
Most people that don't, use baby wipes or something similar.
I have my own office so if I stink, I keep it to myself. But I'm convinced (deluded?) that if you and your clothes are generally clean and you don't eat junk food, then there's not much stink in you to come out.
Frogs: they do ribbit in the afternoon, but not as much as in the morning. And the puddle is more like 8 feet wide, 100 feet long and surrounded by reeds and stuff.
Looks like rain tomorrow, might have to take the bus.
David, I'm not necessarily into GTs, but got a fab deal on this one, brand new (well, now it's about 10 years old) and it's GOLD. I like my Goldie. Or, since I move to SLP, I call it Golda.
