You basically need to call 911 when a crime and/or suspicious act is happening. You need to call each and every time you see it.

Now, I'm guessing that you "know" it is happening, but you don't see it. You can talk to or send an email to the police. For uptown, you may want to send it to Lt. Marie Przynski. She is really great. But they can't do anything unless a crime is being committed. People really need to call 911.

2. Contact your crime prevention specialist. They are paid to chat with residents, and are less likely to give you the brush-off than beat cops.
3. Schedule a ride along with a cop in your neighborhood, and talk it over with them. They're pretty open about stuff they're investigating when you're cruising around for hours on a boring weekday night. I got the low-low on a major investigation in my neighborhood a month before it broke. Note: this tactic is probably more successful when you're a chick :)

It just struck me as an odd thing for someone unhappy about drug dealing next door to them to joke about.

Leave a very detailed, thorough message for the undercover team that handles this type of thing, trust me from experience. Call your local precinct and ask to be put in the voicemail of the CRT team (pronounced cert like the breath mint) Leave the best, most detailed info you can on what you have seen, times, people, vehicles, anything that you can remember. Sit back, with some patience the undercover team will do their thing.

It also wouldn't hurt to call your council member's office either and make a complaint.

When we lived near Uptown, some little twerps were dealing drugs out of the apartment next to us. Kids would be showing up to buy ecstasy for prom night.

One of them got stabbed over it. Those kids were abominable.

Story today said they were "evaluating" her status. She had a state of Minnesota ID.

I realize the "she was an illegal ALIEN (not immigrant)" drumbeat is all over talk radio, with the usual lame disclaimers, as in, "we're not saying she is and ILLEGAL ALIEN, PART OF THE RAGGED HORDE OF HUMAN DEBRIS WASHING OVER OUR BORDER, but if she is......

Maybe the Strib is being a little more careful.

Out of curiosity, are these businesses causing trouble in the neighborhood? Attracting violent and unsavory characters?

What kind of drugs?! I guess you imply illegal drugs?

Probably because a central clearinghouse is easier to deal with than a bunch of different ways into the system.

And I understand your frustration that response times can be slow, but unfortunately you live in a city where real crime happens. You can't really expect them to ignore a murder for your break-in, can you?

They usually do a good job to responding to drug crimes in progress. I've had a few times that were slow, but they have a very good system for prioritizing crime. Sit in a cop car sometime and you can see it happen.

People are not illegal. People are undocumented.

I'm all for the legalization of drugs. I also think we need to have lesser laws around drug offenses. But, I also think drug dealers need to be more concerned about their neighborhoods. Their actions do affect neighborhoods. They should deliver until it is legal.

I've been scolded by 911 operators, so I feel your pain, yepnope.

But I just have to believe that the police are doing their best. I've too called on a crime in progress, that lasted 15 minutes, to no response. I just have to think they had something else going on.

Plus, some cops are just assholes.

It's completely unrelated, but I'd like to point out that WCCO is identifying the woman as being a potential illegal immigrant, undermining bud's usual idiotic point that the press is for some reason trying to keep information from us.

Once I got the third degree from 911 when I was reporting a likely crime in progress. There was a girl screaming and a van shaking out my window at seven corners. I figured they could have a cop stop and see if anything bad was going on (despite the axiom "if the van is rocking don't come knocking"). But the 911 operator quizzed me on whether or not I'd been drinking etc. until there was no more action or screaming.

Maz, getting an ID card is similar to getting a driver's license I would assume, except without the tests.

But your "solution" of closing the borders will not only cripple our economy, it would keep more Mexicans in than it keeps out. It's far too complex a problem for that simple a solution. Just another example of how driving has become a political minefield.

You may want to tabulate some drug-oriented institutions further up Hennepin Avenue. Starting with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, which is a privately owned entity and its shareholders are major regional banks. Banks which are basically permitted to launder as much drug money as they please. However as a matter of courtesy it should be laundered at least three times before coming in. Why do you think Citigroup has operated that fabulous branch down in Bogota for years? Coffee money? (and why did the feds let them buy out the corrupt Mexican bank Banamex?) The computers at Fed-Mpls should be tabulating the money transfers within the system, and data patterns should be readily apparent.

Secondly you should phone in the Homeland Security department, as their hordes of Florida contractors cannot seem to help themselves in bringing in thousands of pounds of cocaine to the same good ol boy-controlled parts of the U.S. as the 1980s. (the MN office is in downtown St. Paul and they do not let you come in to say hello without an appointment, so no, you can't demand their shady contracts).

I mean, if you're worried about a couple fronts in Uptown, consider then the institutions which profit decade-in, decade-out, with nary a ripple. Where else does all that money go, outer space?

Seriously if someone tapes the Mpls 311 operator getting the tip about the Fed, that would be a pretty cool audio. Eh???

Here's a thought: Why not leave an anonymous note for the business owner threatening telling the police? They will almost certainly make sure it stops and you won't have to feel like you ruined anyone's life.
