Mo Rocca blues
From a press release:Comedian Mo Rocca and a Tonight Show with Jay Leno crew will be filming a segment for the popular late-night talk show in Minneapolis-Saint Paul later this week.
Because the cities are the site of the 2008 Republican National Convention, Rocca will talk with local residents about what to see and do in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, how they are preparing for the election and their thoughts on the influx of politicians coming to their cities next September. He'll also interview Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak while commuting to work on his bike and Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman as he plays the bagpipes.
Any suggestions for Mo and Jay?

Yeah. Don't go to Nye's, the service sucks.
Don't protest the RNC in 2008 by coming to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Instead use your time, money, and energy to go to Denver to lobby the Democratic Party and convince them to build the world you want to inhabit.

Definitely do some footage at downtown St. Paul's newest gay bars Camp and Innuendo, asking the patrons and bartenders what they're doing to prepare for the RNC;
Interview one of the dinosaur statues;
Ask the day cook at the REAL Mickey's on W. 7th (NOT the dining car one) what he thinks, that'll be a nice slice of crusty St. Paul for ya;
Get a shot of Polenta walking one of his little fluffy dogs down Summit;
SOMEHOW incorporate Cretin Derham HS into it; people don't believe it when I tell them that's the actual name of a school AND a street in St. Paul
How about some recommendations for week-long out-of-town escape destinations for local residents?! Unfortunately a bit difficult for families as school is back in session. The place is going to be a madhouse - the cities overrun with crazed fanatic Republicans. A rare local event perhaps but not a scene to expose above-average children to. Combine that with the usual seasonal road construction (including Cross-town), just driving across the metro (never mind trying to navigate downtown St. Paul) is going to become a major feat of patience. It is too bad the Convention could not be scheduled for the last week of August as an extension to the Minnesota State Fair. Between the barn animals, the drunk folks in crazy hats, and food stuffs on a stick, the Republicans might just fit in and not seem too much like a nuisance (they could even be offered free tickets to Garrison Keillor's Grandstand live broadcast - or better yet, "Weird Al"'s show).
Interview that up-and-coming rapper Vanilla Wang at his Frogtown residence/studio.

Hey, maybe we can punk THEM by convincing them that there really IS a rising star of Asian Rap in Saint Paul by the name of Vanila Wang. He's about to do his first album in English (He's HUGE in Japan), the buzz is he will be BIGGER THAN PRINCE!!!

Yeah. Here's a suggestion: NBC should do a jaywalking segment on the streets of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and see how many liberal idiots would respond to basic trivia questions 101 by Leno himself.
Wanna bet that Minnesotans, who feel passionately about the local public education system, are just as stupid as the folks from California?
Jay: "Who was the first Governor of the state of Minnesota?
Typical Minnesotan: "Uh...Kevin Garnett?"
IT is well known that Jay Leno has a soft spot for Minnesota. Who else would invite Marjorie Johnson as a guest - several times at that! He loved our former governor and all of the other characters, politico and otherwise, who emerge on the National scene from the North woods.
He certainly could have sent a much more cynical emissary than Mo Rocca.
And heck, every knows our first governor was Hubert Horatio Humphrey (DEMOCRAT!)
Okay, I had to know who Minnesota's first governor was:

This will not be Minnesotas first major-party presidential convention, so the real man-on-the-street question is: "In what year did the Republican party hold its National Convention in Minneapolis?" Bonus points for knowing who was nominated as the Republican Presidential candidate! [Hint: he was already President (#23) but failed to win re-election - alas, one of our least remembered Presidents ...]. Minnesota also voted Republican that year but still somehow later managed to use the elected President's name for a Minneapolis neighborhood and a St. Paul Avenue.
I would suggest any of these events from Charley Underwod's Peace Calendar, or at least stop by the Wednesday evening vigil (5-6PM) on the Lake Street bridge and ask the activist/revolutionary class their thoughts on the RNC coming to town.
