Pop Life: G.B Leighton, bar owner
More Cowbell: White Light Riot CD release
Cheek: Bob Mould at Pride
Darn! I was going to post something here about Pickle Park and the dang deadtreers beat me to it. It's a cross between a nightclub and a sports bar, either man nor beast, fish nor foul. Good 2-4-1 Sunday Happy Hour prices.
Man, the city really needs another sports bar with a craptacular menu!
In this case, the city is Fridley, so the answer is "yeah, we do!"
Great, a 2nd rate sports bar owned by a 2nd rate live act...you couldn't pay me to go there...
So that's where the name came from. Unless you're a fan of his, (and he's got some rabid ones), it's still a stupid name. That location has changed hands a few times. I give it a year maximum.
Thank god Barley John's and Northeast are near cause it's a wasteland up here.
Fridley / Columbia Heights have a surprising number of good ethnic restaurants...and by "surprising number" I mean that there are like 2 or 3 really good ones.
I personally think that Tim Mahoney, GB Leighton, and Mick Sterling should form a trio...they could call themselves "Cheese, Cubed"
You know what's supremely lame?
Racing back from a wedding in St. Francis to catch the final act of the Uptown Pride show... then finding out that Bob Mould wasn't the headliner.
W... T... F?
So who was the headline act?
All I can say for sure is that it was one of the other four bands, unless Bob took another musical turn into the jam-band style and became a chunky black woman.
I went to Barley John's for the first time the other day, because I was at Rosedale buying new jeans. I ordered a glass of one of the barrel-aged, 15% ABV beers and the guy looked at me like I was from outer space; I think I was probably the first one to have one in weeks. I imagine due to the location that the patrons only drink the Bud knockoff one. It was pretty good. Decent food, too.

Maybe not, but YOU would pay for a tie for your cat. Um? First class all the way for you, huh?
It was a dollar, dude...calm yourself...
And I can guarantee it was a 1000 times more entertaining than a GB Leighton show...may not be first class, but it was fucking fun...
i went to pickle park last night, but wont be going back anytime soon.
i live with some guys from the great physician who advanced in the battle of the bands @ pickle park. they now play friday night @ basillica block party.
sound was okay, you could smoke inside...
let the leighton legion alone
It was a dollar, dude...calm yourself...
I have fits of giggles just about every time you post something. Thanks for the laughs.
And I don't care what anyone says -- your cat dressing is hilarious.
Cat- I obviously touched a nerve with the senstive GB fans! To each his own, I guess!
A dollar for hours, nay, days of kitteh-pestering entertainment is a bargain, people!
(GB fans must not be crazy cat ladies.)
I think some people take themselves way too seriously.
I do know there are some rabid GB fans, and although I am not one of them, he is still managing to get people to fork over the $ -- go figure.
But, not seeing the humor is kittehwear? Mind blowing.
Well, now, girls, GB can't be all bad, since he's serving up free booze for the ladies on Thursday nights. Any bar that gives away drinks is at least decent in my book.
I've seen him live, and he's a good musician...but heavy on the "meh" in my book...
On a snarky note about his new bar...for a while there, I thought he held stock at the Fine Line...
"...you could smoke inside..."
A bad business decision from the start. Allowing three months of smoking before the statewide law begins on Oct. 1 is just going to make his new place stink like an old ashtray when it does go smokefree, and may also chase away patrons who have come to like -- and expect -- smokefree music venues.
The 331 Club re-opened under similar circumstances with the Minneapolis ordinance on the way. They decided to open smokefree, rather than allow it and than tell patrons "no" just a short time later.
Plus, there seems to be no effort to return the outdoor seating area the bar had another other name/owner.

Don't worry, sweetheart, I'm calm.
Oh, man, there's nothing I love more than being called sweetheart by a complete stranger!
How about "toots"? Can we call you that?
I'm partial to sugartits...
Too many calories for my liking. They go straight to my waist.
Ah, well, everything in moderation, ya know!
Alie, speaking as a friend who cares about you, you and your hat and tie-wearing kittehs is crayzeh, splenda-tits.
Splenda-tits!
Solves the calorie issue.
Splenda-tits?
MNspeak is better than an espresso for a morning pick-me-up. Heh.
"Cheese, cubed"?
Hilarious.
