not a great area, but I didn't realize there was gunplay in the hood.

Wayne- didn't you know that it's open season on pizza delivery dudes?

Luckily, since he works for Luce he was too high to notice.

Hopefully that bullet wound didn't mess up his tatts...that would be the real tragedy...

That really sucks. I hope everything works out for him.
I used to live on Broadway and Fillmore just a few blocks east and it always seems rather decent. I'm glad I have moved north and east a few blocks more I never hear gun fire in my neighborhood of Waite Park.

Since when did Pizza Luce start delivering north of Broadway?

Too bad we wasn't a superhero like the guys from Galactic Pizza. The bullet would have just bounced right off.

I hereby declare that I will go to Luce for lunch today to support the valiance of this delivery driver and delivery drivers everywhere.

Getting shot sucks.

that sucks....and to think that i felt the greatest danger in the vicinity of the NKB was getting run down by a post-menopausal Mercedes-driving art collector who'd strapped a too-large painting to her roof.

Geez, that sucks. Poor guy; how scary to think that that bullet could've hit him anywhere else. At least Luce is paying for his medical expenses. (Of course, now I can't help but wonder if Luce delivers to my house.)

"Stray bullet" triggers, for me, this mental image of a bullet wandering about the city, lost, nosing into a corner here, zipping across a parking lot there, maybe sitting on a bus bench for a quick rest, nowhere really to go, just drifting, and then this poor pizza guy walks in front of it and cuts it off, and . . .

But don't real bullets almost always zip, in a very short amount of time, striaght out from a gun barrel, directly toward whatever direction the gun shooter had the gun pointed when he pulled the trigger?

So, it just sounded . . funny.

Unfortunate incident.

But on the topic of Northeast delivery. I just moved to St. Anthony East, and need the scoop on who else delivers. No Domino's. Suggestions?

Oh, if only Luce delivered to SLP...I'll just have to settle for Frankies and their scrumptious delivery guys...

These guys deliver to parts of NE, not too sure how far South they go:

Between that and Luce, who needs Dominos?

alexis01:56pm

Snap! Pizza probably delivers to you. Pizzas, hoagies, salads, and appetizers. I recently discovered they deliver to me (I'm on the other side of NE, but nothing frickin' delivers over here) and have been ordering up veggie pizzas.

One good shot in the arm deserves another. A little morphine tetanus booster couldn't hurt after that...

richg03:31pm

I like Snap. They're one of the only places in town making my favorite pizza.

And I think the delivery guy is going to whup whoever took that order. That's waaaay outside the delivery zone.

It was near NKB. Some avant-typographer was taking pot shots at his mac or a soap-maker was really upset with this year's batch of lavendar oil or something.

jim - I live in st anthony east as well (5th and 1st NE) - you can talk Crescent Moon into delivery some nights (or get take-out. best pizza in NE). Luce, Snap, I've gotten Duffy's to deliver on a slow night or just walk down to Punch or Nea since you can't be more than 5 blocks away. Totino's is close, but I'm not a fan. The real tragedy is that we are in the triangle of lost hope for jimmy john's. Seriously, between East Bank, Riverside and Henn & 6th, there are three within 3 miles and none of them will go over a bridge to get over here. Probably afraid of getting capped by Scott Seekins...

Yeah, that was my brother whom was shot. The comment about being to high to notice was out of place. Matt is a pretty straight guy, thank you.
Also, the wound is above any potentially tragic tattoo altering areas.

To the rest that voice sympathy and concern, thank you.

I'm just here for the moment to inform that Channel 9 interviewed him earlier at Luce, and will air this tonight on the 10pm broadcast.

Stay safe....

Glad your brother is OK, though...

Wow.

I'm so glad to hear that Pizza Luce is paying for his medical expenses.

Why can't they take out the bullet though??? I don't get it. It's not like it's near a vital organ or anything... doctors? anyone?

Thanks for all the delivery suggestions!

Hello, I am the delivery driver who was shot. It sucks. Being shot is not very fun. I was on my way back to Luce after delivering to a regular at NKB. Considering I'm not dead or paralyzed, it could have been much worse. As far as the tattoo... my sleeve is on the left arm, but I do have a small anarchy sign tattoo on my right shoulder, guess what when right through the middle of it? So the doctors said they could do much more damage taking the bullet out, than it originally did going in... so it will stay in my arm forever. One more thing.. Luce delivers all the way up to 18th Ave NE cutoff at Johnson to the east and the river to the west. Maybe I'll see ya on the road sometime.

Thanks for all the well wishes, I think I'm going be all right.

Stay safe... and sorry about the cliche, but go and tell the important people in your life that you love em'. You never know when a lonely ol' bullet with no place to go is going to fly through your window....

Elizabeth (not verified)03:49pm

Good luck on the recovery and thanks for coming here to post. Bullets are left in fairly often, just for that reason (the extraction can cause more harm than leaving it in place). I was looking up info on acceptable lead levels in humans and came across lots of studies on retained bullets. In general, they don't cause much harm unless they're lodged in a joint. If that's the case, they slowly disintigrate, leaching lead into the blood.

Sorry about the bullet in the arm.

And MNspeak, I love you.

teucer04:45pm

Well, I like the Pizza Man's column and have, on occasion, defended the honor of his profession when slumming it on Rants. I understand why he is pissed. On the other hand kidding about things that really aren't funny is a natural human reaction, even if it can be a hypocritical. Homer J. Simpson described it in this way: "It's funny coz I don't know 'em." Not so funny when you do, or when you're taken to task by a someone else who doesn't see the humor in it.

But if pizza guy has ever rolled his eyes and laughed at a Darwin Award story or made a joke about the Titanic or Hindenberg disaster, he's technically guilty of the same thing. It's just he's better hidden from the event by distance and/or time.

I try not to kid about these things, myself. But if I find myself grinning at a good-but-possibly-inappropriate oneliner, then I'm complicit. So live and let live, I say, and strive for decency when possible.

In return, you all have permission to make whatever jokes you like at my death, the cause of which I shall strive to make as colorful and embarrassing as possible. I'm thinking auto-erotic asphyxiation following a diagnosis of ass cancer.

s4xton  url05:20pm

I think Pizza Man's column was dead on.

I disagree with Trucer. The column cannot be compared to a random disaster or someone doing something stupid. Pizza Man writes about insulting cultural stereotypes starting with the troll in this thread. Two very different things.

teucer06:17pm
Jun 6

I was reading it as more a reaction against the callousness of the witticism that led into his railing against the stereotypes of his job and how people treat him him because of it. It may not be humane, but it is human.

However, on re-reading, I think you are right.

M. Rolfe- I find it ironic that your anarchy tat was hit and truly hardcore...

All joking aside, that weed crack was way off base, and I was serious when I stated that it seems like it's open season on pizza delivery guys. I keep the fact that you guys are willing to take a bullet to deliver the hot and fresh when I tip, especially when I live DT.

I was gone most of yesterday and missed this thread. I worry about subjects of threads coming here to comment. Then we have to stop being so snarky, right? Because if these stories are about actual people, instead of underlined names, that's different.

Truly, I'm glad the pizzaman is OK. It's one of those jobs that are scary that shouldn't be scary. The pizza man should be like a U.N. relief worker. Off limits for the gunfire.

my stint as a pizza delivery guy in college for all of two deliveries. I got sent out with two pizzas, one to a trailer park off-campus and the other to a notorious off campus student "animal house". I vividly remember the manager who sent me on the delivery saying, "now, when you go to the trailer park, be sure to leave your car lights on & aim them towards the door where you're headed"...didn't instill me with a ton of confidence. It turned out to be uneventful, so headed over to the student housing...only to find that my next delivery was to the apartment of my stoner suitemate from the previous year. I never did make it back to the pizza shop.

justpbob  url09:42am

I was a pizza dilvery guy in college, too. My only real misadventure is nearly passing out behind the wheel due to carbon monoxide poisioning -- our warmers used burning cans of sterno, it was a busy winter weekend and the car was loaded with 3-4 warmers instead of the usual one.

I stopped the car in middle of street and just staggered away to trip over the sidewalk. Other motorists just ignored me, and drove around. Was it "the stereotype?" Never thought about it until now.

PS: Jason: check your work email, please.
