Legendary Wrestler Verne Gagne and a Tragic Tale
Also via MinnPost, a very sad story about the waning days of one of Minnesota’s great wrestling heroes, Verne Gagne, former president andlongtime champion of the American Wrestling Association, who has been suffering Alzheimer’s related dementia and resided in a Bloomington facility with Helmut R. Gutmann, a cancer researcher who came to the US after fleeing Hitler, and who also suffered Alzheimers. As MinnPost tells it, “In a tragic moment on Jan. 26, Gagne apparently threw Gutmann to the floor. Gutmann was taken to the hospital and died 20 days later.”
The story is sympathetic to Gagne and his family, detailing the wrestling legend’s dementia as the result of his illness. For those of us whp grew up fans of local wrestling, it’s a tragic, sobering story that highlights the need for continued study into Alzheimers.
Latest comment — mnblrmkr: Coroner rules Gutmann's death a homicide. "Complications from a broken hip."
