The Pioneer Press looks back on the lost glory days of Roseville and how it has changed over time. I’m not usually one for nostalgia, but it’s sort of hard not to regret living in a world that has lost the Hoboburger.

Did, too! Did not! Urban Trash Warfare
You thought that junker in the yard next door was bad? It’s a rumble in the jungle of Lowry Hill. Neighbors square off over allegations of … zoning code violations [via the Strib]. One neighbor accuses another of operating a contractor’s business from their residence in the upscale Minneapolis neighborhood, including allegations of storing construction materials on-site. Think “King of the Hill” but with mansions. This is what happens when you let those trashy nouveau riche into the neighborhood!
Latest comment — Tommy B: I'll shovel my sidewalk to the concrete as soon as the city does the same with the street. Until then, enjoy the ice muthafathas!
Branding the suburbs
The PiPress runs a piece on how suburbs struggle to identify themselves as unique. TC Sidewalks expands upon the subject.
Latest comment — andyst: can we use the phrase "south of the river" to describe those annoying young people you refer to? south of the river rats? Hmm, possibly, but I thi...
Welcome to the engaging, lively suburbs
Active community building and academic research are proving false the stereotypes of sleepy suburbs full of recluses.
Latest comment — bud jr: I rocked Linden Hills for 17 years, my boy. Back in the Steve Minn days, when there was hope. Now I am comfortably in exile in exurbia. Ramsta...
Sidewalks? Too pedestrian for some
In suburbs, sidewalks can divide. Some say they encroach on privacy. For others, they bring safety and a sense of connection.

Big Box Brings Better Burban Business?
Here’s a story I just stumbled across in the Star Tribune South. It takes a decidedly pro-big-box retail stance.
Latest comment — noodleman: @Stanley: You're one big reason why many American manufacturing jobs are no longer based in this country. But, hey, if you want a service economy w...
Suburban designs bad for your health
City, suburban designs could be bad for your health. Why don’t Americans walk anywhere? Old answer: They’re lazy. New answer: They can’t.There is no sidewalk outside the front door, school is 5 miles away, and there’s a six-lane highway between home and the supermarket.
Latest comment — Tate: Bx, with a European-style commuter bike and some grocery bag panniers, you too can enjoy a slice of that "utopia[n] bullshit."
Monster Houses Make Bad Neighbors???
The Strib covers the outrage in SW Mpls over the proliferation of oversized homes being placed on small city lots. We did touch on this in a Linden Hills thread last month, but I was just curious to see how the me-first bigger-is-better Suburban driving libertarian set felt about this.
Latest comment — Build Them Different: People who have the money build whatever they want big or small wherever they want to whether it looks decent and conforms to the neighborhood. It...
Condo Bust Hits the Suburbs
“In the ‘burbs, you buy a cornfield, put up some houses or a Home Depot, run a piece of asphalt to it, and you’re set,” he said. “But we’re just now figuring this new stuff out.”
This recent Strib article spells out what many of us probably already know just from instinct: condos built in areas of suburban sprawl just aren’t that appealing. But to me the real question is: do you think the kind of “manufactured main streets” we see in places like Maple Grove and Plymouth – with those huge sprawling retail centers- will ever replace the authentic downtowns? Not just Minneapolis and St. Paul but places like Anoka and Hopkins have a genuine feel of community that I think is impossible to manufacture. What do you think?
Latest comment — bobby_b: "Suburbs are largely isolating experiences. While it's true that there are many community activities in suburbs (school events, churches, etc.), su...
Latest comment — esquared: I grew up in Roseville/Shoreview and I don't know about any of these places. And I'm not THAT young. Even though I agree with the "family owned bus...
