Thirty-plus years with WCCO is not Don Shelby’s only claim to fame. The man can tie a tie! And he’s fashion history. That’s right — the Shelby Knot! A knot tied wrongside out, ”balanced, small and precise.”

But while the Neckwear Association of America sang his praises, Shelby was… well… at least a little embarrassed.

”I used to be a pretty fair country reporter,” said Mr. Shelby, who has been a broadcaster at WCCO, the CBS affiliate here, since 1978. ”Now wherever I go, the first thing people come up to me and say is: ‘Hi, Don. Nice knot.’ ”
