Kristy Mussman from Claremont took home the Princess Kay of the Milky Way Crown, winning a chance to spend 8 hours in a cooler this Thursday at the Fair while her likeness is carved out of butter. Back stories can be found here and here, giving me a chance to link to the World Dairy Diary and Midwest Dairy Association websites – both highly underrepresented on MNSpeak. (Per capita consumption of total milk has climbed to 605 pounds today compared with 522 in 1983. )

It’s coming. What will you be eating? Will you dare sample this?

Talent!
In her seven years of organizing the daily parades and nightly talent contests at the Minnesota State Fair, Theresa Weinfurtner has adopted some absolute truths.
For parades: Never assign a high school band to march directly behind a horse. Quit smirking — the main reason is that loud noises, especially from behind, can spook a horse.
For talent contests: Anything can be talent if you do it well enough.

State Fair music line-up
The final opening on the MN State Fair Grandstand schedule has been filled by Gnarls Barkley. Plus, the free stage schedule is set as well – Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, War, Trampled By Turtles and many others. Sadly, no appearances by Wally Pikal or The Spam-Ettes this year.
Latest comment — static: Seems the free stages have a better music lineup then the main stage (which is true most years...IMHO).
state fair rent-a-cops muscle for MNGOP
A friend just phoned from behind the yellow-tape pokey of the Great MN Get-together. He and a GOP booth-sitter/God warrior got into a heated debate about gay marriage. Words and epithets were exchanged and he’s been detained by the fair’s finest since – now going on 40 minutes.
While I agree that his debate skills are lacking, what about freedom of (poor) speech? Any other fairgoers out there who’ve been detained for being lippy?
Latest comment — alexis: Never been detained, but I was asked to leave the DFL booth for laughing too loudly.

The Great MNSpeak Get-Together
Tomorrow is the beginning of the State Fair. More than just a twelve-day celebration of deep-fried oddities, it’s a unique opportunity for MNspeakers to get together in person. Have a corn dog with raindog. Visit the pet center with aliecat. Stand in the rain with wayne. As several have noted, we have been a little cranky on this forum of late, and I think we need to relax and have some fun. So use this post to connect with others at the Fair and have some fun before the summer’s done. Pwrgeek and I are starting things off early at the WCCO booth today. See you all at the Fair!
