Captain Capitalism goes off on an extended, and entertaining, rant about how many of the people living in massive mansions around Lake Minnetonka are financial deadbeats. (Thanks, Ed.)

New twist or mortgage fraud
Federal officials are investigating a Hastings couple in a new twist on mortgage fraud — converting apartment buildings in Rochester, Sauk Rapids and Spicer into condominiums and then allegedly using phony buyers and bogus bank records to secure more than $5.5 million in financing.

Theft, Salvage & Demolition Woes
5 Eyewitness news paid a visit to one of Minneapolis’s most endangered houses last night. Interestingly, while the story outlines a long-standing problem with architectural theft in abandoned property, the segment shows one with much of its features intact. Another question left unanswered by the reportage is whether any legitimate salvage WILL take place at these properties… or if these features ultimately belong to the bulldozer.

The Bardwell Ferrant House
Ranty alias Connie Nompelis of the Healy House blog and MNSpeak regular, on her efforts to get a preservationist
instead of another slumlord to buy and rescue the one, the only, pink palace…the Bardwell Ferrant House.
Connie doesn’t just talk about preservation, she LIVES it!

Getting Denied – No Apt for You!
Minneapolis’ very own Fair Isaac is the father-mother of the FICO score. This score is used to determine you worth by banks, insurers, employers, and landlords (among countless others). So what happens if your score isn’t good enough? You get denied an apartment, a job, etc.
What I am most curious about, though, is apartments. Has anyone here ever been denied an apartment based on your credit score, despite having a reputably solid rental history and a decent annual income?
Latest comment — sandburg: I've never been denied, but I've suspected that I would be because the rent would have made up more than 30% of my income, so I didn't apply to mos...

City of Luverne Not Above Bribery
No, city leaders aren’t accepting cash to look the other way while you pass around your best friends top secret hot dish recipe. The Luverne Chamber of Commerce is handing out incentives to folks willing to buy a home and live in their little slice of heaven (no snark here, Luverne is a lovely town I wave at on my way to Sioux Falls).
Perks include anything from six months of free Center Pointe Energy service, a free bucket of chicken (sign me up!), free hair cuts, and myriad gift certificates for local businesses. Luverne is about 30 minutes west of Sioux Falls, SD for those concerned about job availability, diversions, and shopping. What would it take for you folks to move out to the country?

Largest Mortgage Fraud Enterprise Yet?
Behind the Mortgage points is to this terrifying tale in the PiPress: The former Plymouth resident and his companies remain the subject of a federal investigation, according to Evans and several buyers. If allegations prove true, it would be the largest mortgage fraud scheme to surface in Minnesota.

Wright Homes for Sale
If you have some cash laying around, The New York Times notes that two Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian homes in Minnesota recently were put up for sale: One in Stillwater, for $3.75 million, and one in Cloquet for a relative bargain of $975,000.
