Secrets of the City

I know I asked for advice on an earlier post but I have a few more details. I am looking for a Loft/Condo/Townhome that would be 1 or 2 bedrooms (800 to 1200 sq. foot) at leat 1 underground parking spot in the southwest Minneapolis area (from Edem Prarie to the downtown area). I would like to get something relatively new or in the last 10 years. Somehwere close to nightlife/eating/music I can spend up to 1200 a month (rent or buy). I am by myself so I don’t have to worry about schools,etc… Any advice would be welcomed and appreciated.

My fiance and I are getting married in October of this year, then we’re moving to Minnesota (from Ontario Canada). He’s got a pretty solid shot at transferring to Winona so that very well might be where we end up.

Basically, we’re looking for a good community with good neighbors which we can settle into. Chances are we’ll buy a house eventually and have children – so it’s pretty important that we find somewhere safe, with good values, and people. And my fiance loves boating and hiking. The outdoors is fairly important to us.

Can any one make any suggestions? Is Winona a good place to start a family? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Even suggestions other then Winona!

Hi I have just accepted a job in Minneapolis (moving from Arizona). I am looking for local folks advice on where to live. I am really intrigued with the downtown area but obviously don’t want to end up in the wrong neighborhood. My preference would be a condo, townhome, or a loft close to public transportation so I can enjoy what downtown has to offer. I seek the advice of those who have “been there done that”. Please let me know if you have some sage advice and or recommendations. Price is a factor to some degree but I am really looking for a great value and a relatively clean neighborhood. Hello, I currently reside in Richmond VA and desperately want to move to some place else. Minneapolis is one of the cities am considering because of its relative liberalism.

I am a recent graduate with finance major and am in search of an entry level position as analyst when I move to Minneapolis. I request for your input on the job prospect for fresh graduates with a business degree and the start up cost required to settle in Minneapolis (i.e average monthly expense).

I’m a single mom of a 7 year old and moving to MN from upstate NY. I need a afordable house or TH to rent near Maple Grove. I hear the schools are the best in that area. As for looking for a job I have worked in special education as a aide for A LONG TIME. Any ideas in where to look for jobs ? I would really like to stay in the Austism area ! Any ideas for housing,jobs,or any thing that would help us with our BIG move would be helpful !!!!

My boyfriend and I are thinking of relocating from Flint MI to Minneapolis this October. We are both graphic designers in our mid 20’s, and would like to stay in that field if possible. 2 questions.

1. I’ve heard Minneapolis is a great place for those interested in the graphic design/advertising industry, but this scares us a bit that it’s like LA for actors trying to make it and ending up waiting tables forever. Basically, is the market FLOODED with designers looking for work, or are there plenty of jobs to go around?

2. We’re planning on living downtown if we can, but how is getting around in the winters? We’re coming from Michigan, so we’re used to snow, but just HOW much snow are we talking about? Will we be hard pressed to unearth ourselves enough to go hit the bars or galleries on the weekends?

We are going to be moving to the Minneapolis area in about 2 or 3 months because my husband has been transferred. HELP! I have never been to MN at all, and have three children and only want the best for them. My husband will mainly be working in the northern Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Where should we move? What are the top school districts in the area? We’ve been playing around looking at northern Hennepin/Southern Anoka counties. We need an area with super strong schools and a high quality of life for younger kids. We also need an area where we can get a “custom” home (not crazy about cookie cutters) and some mature trees, but prefer a newer house.

Towns of Maple Grove, Excelsior, Anoka, Andover, Coon Rapids, and Ham Lake have shown up on our house searches with homes in our price range that look nice.

The most important thing is the school district- where should we look? I am also looking for a great preschool in the area for my 3 year old.

Any thoughts?????

I’m considering a move to the Twin Cities for a job working for a small book publishing company. Its a fairly senior level position, with a lot of responsibility and requires 5 years of experience. I would be moving from New York City to take this job. I’m curious what any of you might think a reasonable salary for this kind of job would be, I’m having a hard time with this coming from outside the area (and from such an expensive area). Further, what kind of salary would a woman in her early 30s need to be making to live decently? Thanks for your help.

I am from Southern California, born and raised and looking for a change. I spent a few weeks during the summer of 2007 with my brother who lives in Burnsville. Is there any transplants from the Orange County, California area currently residing in the Twin Cities area that could tell their experience with adjusting to Minnesota?
I watch a web cam that is located in Burnsville and noticed the snow is melting away. Do you locals think there will be more snow in the coming months or weeks? I can handle the cold, the snow just worries me.
