Moving from Europe
The minute I found out my family and I were moving to Minneapolis I found mnspeak.com. It’s always nice to have a bit of information before you jump in with two feet! Anyway, I will get to the point. We live in The Netherlands (Holland) and my main form of transportation is a bicycle (yes, even with two kids) and this is purely by choice (I choose to let the car sit in the driveway). Everything is close and convenient: the grocery store is around the corner, as is a fantastic school, and gym etc. Could anyone suggest an area that has this kind of EU quality (nice neighborhoods only please, safe to ride a bike, bike trails etc)? Schools to look at? Also, I am questioning private vs. public? Any comments on the Waldorf School? Also since we will be temporary (max. 3 years) we plan to rent. Would anyone suggest a rental site specializing in single family living? I seem to find mostly apartments. Lastly, on my husbands request… a good bread store (a real Dutchman)! Thank you ahead of time for the information!

Moving from NYC to Minneapolis
My fiance and I are thinking of moving to Minneapolis (he was originally from MN). I know I would have to take a pay cut and cost of living is less in Minnesota. But I am wondering how the job market is currently in Minneapolis. Any insights on the pros and cons of moving to Minneapolis would be greatly appreciate.
Latest comment — aliecat: Health Care is always a good field. The pay isn't as great as the private sector, but the job security is pretty good. Oh, and how awesome is it ...
Moving From San Francisco
Ok. Same song and dance as other posts. I am moving to MN and have a couple questions maybe some locals couple help me out with. I have never been there but have a potential job offer I am looking at working in downtown Minneapolis.
A) I hear it is BUTT cold there. (Can I say butt on this site?!)
B) What exactly is “up north”? I keep hearing this from a coworker.
C) I am a city girl, working 30 yr old, but not a fan of high crime rates. I realize its everywher ... but any suggestions on neighborhoods to live in and stay away from.
D) I read the tornado post. Fricking hilarious. So, if they aren’t that bad, what is the worst part of MN living?
E) Where can I watch and cheer for the 49-ers and make it out alive?
F) Any other tid bits for a single gal?

Looking for a smaller city?
I’ve been reading the threads for moving to MN for a while now. I am wanting to move to MN after I finish grad school. However I do not want to move to Minneapolis or St. Paul. I am very much a country person and like smaller towns, or out of town locations. I would like to live out of town and don’t mind 30-40 min commutes to work. It’s the norm for me. I currently drive 1 hr. each way. I will be looking for an engineering job and after checking the job search sites for MN, I don’t think that will be a problem. I live by Terre Haute IN, (about 60,000 people) and that size of town is fine with me. So what are some small to medium size cites that have good manufacturing jobs, and don’t have miles of suburbs around them? I absolutely love the outdoors and the outdoor opportunities will be very important to me, as well as a decent cost of living environment. I am also planning a trip up there in October (Long weekend trip) what are some places I should see? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Wishing to move to Twin Cities
I would like to move to the Twin Cities, and am debating whether I would like Minneapolis or St. Paul better. I would want to live in the heart of which ever city I move to; the suburbs are of no interest to me. I’ve read that St. Paul is less expensive than Minneapolis. I currently live in Indiana, and feel like a fish out of water. I am of the “wrong” ideological world view for Indiana, and desire an area where there is much ethnic diversity, art galleries, cafe’s, locally-owned businesses, etc. Some nightlife is important also. In other words, I am looking for a progressive community that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to live in. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I am very close to finish my bachelor’s degree in mathematics education, unfortunatelly, economy and inflation in california force me to joint my brother who lives in snt. paul. thank you for reading this.

Moving to MN – what are the people like?
I’m moving from Utah to Minneapolis. Utah is a difficult place to meet new people – everyone is very guarded and suspicious of each other. I’m hoping MN will be an improvement. Can you tell me what the people are like there? Is it easy to meet people? Are they friendly?
