MPR has the horrifying tale of a Minneapolis police officer who was shot by another officer: I’m holding my left abdomen because it was hurting really bad and they stopped their squad about nine or 10 feet from me. Without any verbal warning, without any commands, without provocation, Officer Storlie jumps out and lights me up with his MP5 submachine gun.

Blue Laws in Minnesota
WCCO’s Good Questions asks about Minnesota’s Blue Laws — you know, the laws that say we can’t buy liquor and cars on Sunday (or, apparently, eat hamburgers in St. Cloud). What do you think of these laws?
Latest comment — mfunny: when does the state of MN join the 21st century? MN is one of 4 states the still has outdated Sunday blue laws....
Music downloading trial
It’s the nation’s first trial of someone accused of illegally downloading music. And it’s in Duluth.

Speeding Minnesota
In June and July, police stopped about 10,000 people and issued about 7,000 citations for speeding. No word yet on whether it is 10,000 different people, or just one particularly contrary speeder.

No 01100011, No DUI.
The saga continues for Dale Lee Underdahl, who was arrested last year for driving whilst under the influence of spirituous beverages. He sued for and won access to the source code for the breathalyzer, but the Minnesota state public safety commissioner has so far refused to hand over the bits and bytes. If this results in his case being thrown out, could this result in similar cases being tossed? Should it?
Latest comment — angelin: I am a bit confused with the rules. Officers can testify about how the defendant was driving, what he told them, how he performed in field sobriety...
So you don’t like what a blogger writes
Let’s say, for example, that you are Stuart Pivar, and you have written a book that you feel is a revolutionary reexamination of evolution. And then a fellow named PZ Meyers, Ph.D., who is a professor in the Division of Science & Math, University of Minnesota, Morris, writes two scathing reviews of your book, which you sent him to review, saying that your theories have “almost nothing to do with reality.” Gosh, what do you do?
Simple: Sue him.
Latest comment — MT: Never underestimate the well-connected boobie-lover-lobby. We are strong. BTW, Pivar drew Scheindlin as the judge. Good luck buddy.
Sidewalks? Too pedestrian for some
In suburbs, sidewalks can divide. Some say they encroach on privacy. For others, they bring safety and a sense of connection.

Spare some change?
The Minneapolis City Council plans to vote today on its panhandler crackdown (pdf). The Strib’s resident lefty and righty, Nick Coleman and Katherine Kersten, have each weighed in with completely unsurprising (yet entertaining, for different reasons) takes on the issue. So, are panhandlers really that much of a problem? Is it that hard to roll up your window at the exit ramp or walk away from the shaggy, crazy guy on Nicollet Mall? What are your best strategies for blowing off beggars?
