Help a Klingon Party Down with the Big Guys

Thanks to LOL/OMG! for bringing yet another nerdy rarity to our attention.

The local Klingon clan responsible for Commedia Beauregard’s annual production of A Klingon Christmas Carol has been nominated for a an award at the International Special Events Society’s Star Awards for “Best Use of Food in an Event.” The food? A Klingon ship cake designed by local cake artist Marie Porter.

But… tickets are $75 a pop, so Marie and her “four strapping Klingon warriors” are seeking donations to help pay for the event.

Donate and read more about it HERE. At the very least, you can take heart in the fact that you helped send a pack of Klingons into a fancy, red carpet affair. And that alone is worth at least $5, if you ask us!

Donors from $5-$75 get cool ‘thank you’ gifts such as autographed pics of the Klingons and brownie mix. Brownie mix? Huh?

Golden Valley Woman Among Top Donors of the Year

Caroline Amplatz, of Golden Valley, made it onto Slate’s list of the largest charitable contributions of the year for a $50 million donation to the Minnesota Medical Foundation in support of the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, scheduled to open in 2011.

Amplatz made the commitment to honor her father, Kurt Amplatz, a retired professor of radiology who taught at the University of Minnesota for 42 years. Dr. Amplatz invented numerous medical devices and procedures, including the Amplatzer, a device used to repair congenital heart defects, which provided another option to open-heart surgery for some patients.

How Can We Help Haiti?

Ok, I’ve seen a slew of local efforts to help Haiti, and now I can’t seem to find them all, so I beg you all to contribute to this post in whatever way you can. If you know of other opportunities, please add them to the comments.

This week, through Sunday, when a guest brings in a copy of the attached message D’Amico and Sons will donate 10% of their total purchase to the American Red Cross Haiti Disaster Relief.

This Friday, at 6pm, head to the Cedar Cultural Center for the Solidarité Avec Haïti: Earthquake Relief Fundraiser. Contributing performers will include Viviana Pintado, Maria Isa, Kenn Wanaku, Doug Little & Charanga Tropical, Yenyeré, and Batucada do Norte.

Also on Friday, @msptweetup is hosting a social media event at Grumpy’s (on Washington) to benefit Haiti. “Buckets of Change,” as the event is called, is counting on all of us having those random buckets of change around our homes — you know, the jars, drawers, containers of any sort we all discard our loose change into so as not to find it on the floor, under the bed, and in the coach pillows. Bring your buckets of change to Grumpy’s at 7pm to donate to Haiti relief. Bring dollars, bring quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Bring it all. All proceeds will go directly to the American Red Cross to benefit Haiti Relief and Development.

No Charity For Minnesota Nonprofits?

Everyone I know in the nonprofit world (and for-profit, for that matter) is bracing for the worst. Large or small, just about every nonprofit is seeing greater needs and fewer dollars as the economic crisis grows. There have been some interesting campains to help local nonprofits. The United Way’s $5 campaign, for example. We at the American Lung Association of Minnesota are also felling the pinch.

Our answer? Stair climb!
