The Twin Cities has a lot to be proud of when it comes to gender equality in its music scene. From Dessa to Desdemona, Channy to Christy, and everyone in between, we boast some truly badass ladies. In recognition of this, the Celebrate Women in Music event is gearing up for its second year with performances by Alison Scott, Pink Mink, Holly Newsom, and Desdemona, as well as a paneled discussion with 89.3 The Current DJ Barb Abney featuring the aforementioned artists, local industry types like talent buyers Sonia Grover (First Avenue), Kim King (Fine Line Music Cafe), and Maggie MacPherson (former Jayhawks manager), and journalist Andrea Swensson (City Pages music editor). The Pioneer Press recently spoke about the event with a few of those involved, who stressed the open-mindedness of the TC music scene and importance of not limiting one’s self based on gender expectations.
