The press conference to introduce the newest member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, 20-year old Spaniard Ricky Rubio, dominated the morning’s news cycle, which is exciting if you’re a sports fan.

If you’re not that interested in offseason developments at the Target Center, however, you might be wondering what the commotion is about.

There are a few reasons for all celebrating around Rubio’s arrival in Minnesota. First, Rubio is good and the Timberwolves are very, very bad. Since drafting Rubio two years ago, Minnesota’s professional basketball team has only won a total of 32 games. Bringing Rubio on board adds to the Wolves’ talent pool, which is currently very shallow, and greatly improves the team’s chancing at winning a few more games.

Next, the deal to bring Rubio to the Timberwolves took two years to close. Timberwolves management, local and national sportswriters covering the story, and basketball fans worked, waited, and hoped to see if Rubio would actually make it to Minnesota, and the dream is now a reality.

Last, and certainly not least, Rubio is a bit dreamy. With his big smile and youthful shaggy hair, the Timberwolves are hoping will become a franchise player for the team who is both a hit with the guys and the gals.
