Last night Mayor R.T. Rybak stood before Minneapolis businesses with a grand plan: how to double the population of downtown residents without doubling the amount of cars by 2020.
The STrib report that Rybak spoke of designing a system of streetcars and heated sidewalks to make his vision a reality. Those incredulous about the idea heard Rybak retort that unless we rethink our walkways and means of transportation we will never be able to “erase that imaginary line between where we live and where we work.”
Rybak proposed using steam from the Hennepin County garbage burner to heat the sidewalks, redesigning retail, and redoing Nicollet Mall.
It’s obvious there are mixed feelings about the proposed upgrade. What do you think?
