Religious Leaders Experience the Food Stamp Challenge
Reliance on food stamps has grown significantly across the country and many are feeling the effects of a limited grocery budget. To raise hunger awareness and promote food shelf donations, roughly a dozen local Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religious leaders step up to the challenge of trying to purchase groceries on a $31.50 weekly budget; the average food stamp benefit amount. Tough shopping choices included deciding what foods would provide the most substance and nutrition as well as what necessary food staples to purchase. These religious leaders are hoping their challenge will be a call to action and a true look into what it’s like to live on a food stamp budget.
