Friday
Get your checkbooks out (that’s a joke, bring a bunch of cash) to Powderhorn Empty Bowls for this all day event at Powderhorn Park. It’s Art Attack aka Art-a-Whirl of the fall, but actually better because it’s not as nuts, throughout Northeast MPLS art studios. See a live streamed lecture from none other than Thomas Piketty at the Alliance Française. Boneshaker Books hosts the release for Pinball Drugs Aliens Satan, the new collection of science fiction and horror stories from Minnesota author Fiada Fey on St. Small indie press Furtive Labors. Huge metal show at the Hexagon with KEN mode, Lo-Pan, and others.
Saturday
It’s a huge day for art openings, just check these out. Showroom has reception for Body Images, an exhibition of paintings by Justine Di Fiore. SooVAC hosts a reception for its shows, including Dead Reckoning, a “fictitious 360-degree landscape”(!) by Alyssa Baguss. Circa Gallery opens their 25th anniversary juried exhibition, this time featuring 25 MN artists and curated by Christopher Atkins from the MMAA. CO Exhibitions also opens a show with 25 artists, these from around the country, who provide work for the new Strange Girls Never Die. Rosalux recepts for Nuts and Bits, a show of new paintings by Shawn McNulty and Daniel Buettner. A bunch of underground art bands, including The Cult of Lip (ex-Vats members) and Orchid Thief, play The White Page gallery. Dancer Maureen Fleming brings her surreal movement poetry to the O’Shaughnessy, accompanied by text by David Henry Hwang and music by Philip Glass, performed live by pianist Bruce Brubaker. Lee’s Liquor Lounge has an action-packed November, including a show from The Belfast Cowboys with special guests Prairie Fire Lady Choir. Yo La Tengo deliver an evening of acoustic music at The Pantages. It’s Modern Vaudeville, back at the Bryant Lake Bowl. Gotta get to Open Eye Figure Theater to see Free Fall, “three weeks of eclectic artists performing their original work”, and this week it’s Zoe Sommers Haas. The week-long run of Blueprint, “one-woman play with video, movement, and audio montage that follows a modern-day cowgirl”, opens at The Red Eye Theater.
