Minneapolis Has its First Openly Lesbian Police Chief
Receiving unanimous approval from the City Council on Friday, Minneapolis has appointed its first ever openly lesbian police chief, Janee Harteau. Harteau has spent 25 years on the force and is stepping in for now retired Tim Dolan.
Harteau says that while the precedent she is setting may be inspirational for others it is not personally significant for her. She plans to focus her energy on structural and personal changes within the police department. Harteau has complained in the past about how the department has treated women and hopes her position can provide reform. She also intends to review the department’s “use of force” policies, hoping to change the levels and types of force officers can use in different situations.
