Beth Hawkins and Cynthia Boyd begin a five-part look into segregation in the modern TC school system: In 1972, segregation in Minneapolis schools was so grave a federal judge ordered the city to begin busing students to achieve racial balance. Thirty-six years and several attempted reforms later, Twin Cities-area schools are more segregated than ever.

My elementary, junior high and high school are all majorit minority schools. This was not the case when I was there, though my high school was getting close. My elementary school only had handfuls of black/asian/latino students.
Anyway, I think MinnPost is doing really good work with this series, as with most of their work. If people like these things, they should donate to MinnPost (as well as The UpTake and other independent non-profit media outlets).

Missing space between “Boyd” and “begin,” but thanks for the linkage, Max.

Oh CRAP.
Still, hell of a series. I was always a fan of Beth and am glad to see she’s still doing this sort of important investigatory journalism.

Anyone surprised that “Afrocentric Academy” is one of the Racially Identifiable schools? Just a hunch, but I think they did that on purpose.
