From the Strib: St. Paul is going to court to sue a street gang and to ban some of its members from associating with one another in a specific area, becoming the first Minnesota city to enlist so drastic a measure to prevent street violence.

When I read the headline I thought it said “St. Paul seeks to gang bang Cinco de Mayo…”

This is an interesting approach. I was surprised to see that so many other cities are doing it. At first the legality seemed a little fuzzy, but a number of other cities are able to do this through lawsuits, by treating the gang as an entity, much like they do in criminal code(how you can get stiffer sentences for doing a crime to benefit a gang). I say go for it. If it keeps shitheads from showing up where good people are trying to have family friendly celebrations, it’s a good idea.
it seems the ACLU has challenged these other cases in different cities with not much progress.

You, too?!

Seems naive to me. A gang member who violated the injunction would be charged with a misdemeanor. And “safety zone”? What the hell is that?
I understand wanting to provide a safe environment for Cinco de Mayo, but I’m not sure that this would be effective.

the article says one of the ways they determine who is a gang member is by their clothing. This seems extremely sketchy to me.

@ceci
Stay tuned for the follow-up post about profiling.

Here’s my new novel concept: gang members who are American citizens are guilty of treason and should always be charged in federal courts and policed by the Feds. I justify this based upon their sworn oaths of loyalty to the entity and their belief in territory etc.
Benefits: It frees up state and local police to handle crimes more their scale, as gangs like the Sureno, the Mexican Mafia, the MS-13, the PCC and United Bamboo are multi-national non-state actors like terror cells with profit motives, or western imperialists. Whatever…

I think someone should set up a program to channel gang members energies into bar trivia. If they were sent to Merlin’s Rest, gangs could consist of no more than four people.
Also, few people would get kicked off teams because once you would join a gang-backed trivia team, you’d be in it for life.
We could have midnight trivia instead of basketball for the kids. Because, let’s be honest, they’re never going to go pro in basketball but there are plenty of game shows. Besides, who remembers “Hoop Dreams”? Few. “Slumdog Millionare”? Exactly.
I’ll see y’all is Oslo when I pick up my Nobel Peace prize.
/did I seriously just write this?

lunch!- nice to see you again.
5:42 pm
lunch, I think in some instances gang members are tried in federal court under the mob laws (Ricoh, et all), and police use lower profile members to get at the gang leaders.
6:27 pm
RICO.
(Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations act)
/sorry

I think I was thinking of the camera…

Looks like the “gang” members the city is targeting don’t have much, if any criminal history.
I guess St. Paul must have gone to their Pre-crime division.
Given St. Paul’s track record with the RNC, I’m pretty skeptical.

Interesting.

It is about time to take such a drastic approach. At least someone is doing something to fix these gangs.
