Ross Raihala’s piece on Miley Cyrus’s recent show is either a terrific takedown of bland pop that overly relies an an almost robotic vision of teen sexuality or evidence that Ross is an angry old man. I can’t decide which: In front of a sold-out crowd of 16,500, the 16-year-old spent 85 minutes stuck in overdrive, whipping her hair, belting out her hits and revealing enough of her inner thighs to make even Lady Gaga blush. Seriously, this girl is a millionaire and she can’t afford any pants?

Contemporary pop music, on the whole, is less about music than it is about “style.” What Miley does, however, is no different than the bubblegum the Boomers worshipped in the ’60s and ’70s (e.g. the Archies, David Cassidy, Leif Garrett, etc.), so I don’t know what it was that Raihala was expecting. Teeny bop will always be teeny bop. Why do some adults think it should be more than what it is: Marketing?

After reading both the strib and the pioneer press story and not having attended I am left with the following takeaways.
1. Parents/adults will always have a disconnect between reality and perceived sexuality of musicians.
2. Most modern musical stars can perform or they can sing, very few can do both.

Angry old man?
Sounds more like a dirty old man.

From what I know about Ross’ writing over the years, I am definitely calling “terrific takedown.”
