Picked to Click 2009

Four years ago I had seen every band on the list. Then it dropped to half, then one or two. I haven’t heard of one of these – now it’s “these kids and their music!”

Please, someone tell me who I should break my new music fast with.

And look at you. Not only have you survived, but you have THRIVED. Kicking ass and taking names in a Recession Economy.

I have no idea how to take that…

It’s called growing up. Often mistaken for, but not entirely parallel with, growing old. You don’t want to be the creepy old guy in the back by the bar @ The Entry. I know him, and trust me that he feels equally awkward.

Well, um, yeah… but I’m only 27.

you’ve probably made a step in the right direction, but what’s changed from a personal perspective?

also, worse than being the creepy guy at the bar at the entry is being the creepy guy backstage with the band.

I was at the Entry last night, thinking Hey, I’m at the Entry! I’ve still got it! (After assessing the age range and determining there were quite a few people my age).

I haven’t heard of a single band on that list, though.

…trust me that he feels equally awkward.

I do NOT feel awkard. Just old. Turn down that music, you damn kids!

jane, you will ALWAYS have it.

:)

@Jeffk

27 is sufficiently old to start growing up. Most procrastinate till 29 when the big three zero looms; consider yourself ahead of the game.

Sizzle on Jeff.

Young enough to go out to loud shows, old enough to remember ear plugs.

Smart enough to go over to 1st Ave where there was no line for drinks.

“I was at the Entry last night”

is that a euphemism?

My rule of thumb is to only go to shows where the average age of the band is within 5 years of my own age. Considering that I hate arena shows, the pickings are getting slimmer every year.

Most. Depressing. Thread. Evar.

Well there is the Wilco show on Friday.

What caused the rapid deceleration in my attending shows was when they stopped giving out comps to almost every show. I don’t think I paid to attend many show from 1995-1997.

I guess that gives you a good idea of how old I am.

what caused my rapid deceleration was:

1) no longer working in a live music venue
2) having to wake up at 6am weekdays coupled with
3) seemingly 90% of bands I like passing through the TCs on Thur or Mon so they can play weekend gigs in CHI (this happened in DET, too, but was less of a factor as I was in the business)

Growing older and more out of of touch by the day need not be an entirely unpleasant experience jeff.

don’t feel bad– i’m only 26, am a fairly successful performer IN the local music scene, write for a popular music blog that covers a lot of local music and i’ve never seen any of the bands picked this year neither.

and i don’t mean that in a negative way, like the wrong bands were picked or anything, just that the TC scene is so deep these days that it’s easy to feel like you’re out of the loop.

looking forward to catching these bands, maybe hearing something new.

I don’t think MNSpeak is hiring.

Is anyone?

God, I’ll be rat.

What band, Mr./Ms. Glove?

And can you get us, you good internet friends, some comps?

I’d start cultivating an interest in jazz, jeffk.

I already like jazz. Shit!

But here’s a question, and I read the article today while I was eating lunch. Based on what elguante said, maybe it’s not just me. Are these choices, perhaps, *actually* more obscure? Are these bands playing shows for twelve people in a basement in uptown?

Perhaps all the “big” groups opted out of the list to avoid “the curse”. Huh? Huh?

@jeffk: Maybe? And then when they play before a crowd of 18, they’re told they’ve “sold out” and become “too commercial.” Such is life in the New Millennium fast lane, I guess.

@DouglasG: Maybe it’s because a “big” group no longer fits the definition of “up and coming?”
