Vikings defensive linemen Kevin Williams and Pat Williams have been suspended for the last 4 regular season games. Both players had taken a weight loss supplement called “StarCaps.” The supplement itself isn’t banned by the NFL, but it contains an unlisted ingredient that is. Both Williams’ argued that they had no way of knowing the banned ingredient was in the product. Sounds reasonable to me. Reactions from Reusse, Daily Norseman, Viking Age, Powers.

This is bogus. Very bogus.

I haven’t read all the relevant stories yet, but, from what I understand, the NFL sent out a warning about StarCap in 2006.
It’s pretty clear that Pat Williams, at least, was using this to lose weight, but, if it’s banned, it’s banned.
Sucks for the Vikings.

And it’s a little early for the Vikings fans’ mantra, but here goes…
There’s always next year.
There’s always next year.
There’s always next year.

Reusse’s point about the union not sticking up for these guys is well taken. One of them is losing a million dollars, which is way out of proportion to the offense. Where is the union? Anyone who has looked into the history of the football players union (as opposed to the baseball players union) has to wonder why they’re all wearing GU patches to honor the late Gene Upshaw. I’d be wearing an FU patch if I were one of the Williams.
