Food critic, Adam Platt, contributes this piece to New York magazine: a slideshow titled Heaven On Bread. He tracks down the eight best-tasting, best-looking sandwiches in the whole of Manhattan.
My vote goes to either the House-smoked BLT or the Cuban. If we knew what was good for us here in flyover-land, we’d be enjoying these marvelous creations, too, and depart permanently from our white bread existence.
Nom nom nom!

There are two Adam Platts. You can find photos of MSPMag’s bespectacled Adam Platt all over the internets:

But NYMag’s Adam Platt keeps his face out of the papers so he can semi-anonymously review NYC restaurants.

Might as well delete this post now, as it lacks any local relevance.

Whoops. I’ll just leave it up as an open thread. Anybody eat at Burger Jones yet?
1:00 pm
Oh, jeez.
How was I to know? It was certainly possible to my meager mind than a Twin Citian could be free-lancing for NY Mag, too, about food.
I still think we need more sandwich variety. That house-smoked BLT looks nummy.

I have no Jones for Burger Jones as of yet.

And what are the odds, anyway, of there being two Adam Platts who write food reviews for two different metropolitan magazines in two different states?
I should win a prize or something, dontchathink?

I would say the odds are exactly 1 in 1.

Oh, sure. AFTER the fact, g.
That’s like saying your chances of getting hit by lightning are 100% … after you’ve been fried crispy by a bolt.

How’s about a discussion of the best local restaurant sandwich?
I nominate:
Banh Mi @ Saigon
Bacon, Egg & Harissa @ 112
Pulled Pork @ TTD
1:20 pm
Also, in the almost-local heart attack sandwich category:
Mort’s Smoked Brisket on Challah.

Yes, where are the best sandwiches?
I had a veggie spread sandwich at Bread and Chocolate on Saturday and it was ho-hum.
I’d like a really good eggplant parm sandwich. Anywhere know where to find one? I used to get these amazing ones at a hole in the wall in Boston. I still think about them, but haven’t had one since near as good.

My faves:

I agree with g-rote on the Banh Mi @ Saigon. Best on University Ave. The mock duck sandwich at Pizza Luce is pretty good, as is anything from Mavricks.
Oh, and the Dago sandwich from Dusty’s Bar in NE Mpls.

Banh Mi @ Saigon
Absolutely!
Actually, everything at Saigon is great. Love the new location, too.

G_rote is the Saigon bahn mi better than Quang’s? That’s the only one I’ve had.
The egg, bacon and harissa sandwich is suberb.
KC, not eggplant parm, but Trieste has a baba ganouj pita sandwich. Trieste, how I love thee.
Have been meaning to get to Be’wiched. Maybe I’ll take a long lunch this week and walk over there.

BTW some friends had a perfectly decent experience at Burger Jones. Food good, service good enough.
I am more looking forward to Rustica opening in that same strip mall.
2:25 pm
Siagon practically introduced the Twin Cities to bahn mi, jane.
It’s one of three really good Vietnamese restuarants that have lasted decades on University Ave. (although all are in new buildings). The others are Hoa Bien @ Lexington & University and Mai Village @ Wstern & University.

Shhh, bob. Don’t give away too many of our St. Paul secrets. Let’s let the folks west of the river continue believing they’ve got the best of everything. In the meantime, we don’t have to fight the crowds.
2:32 pm
You have a good point there, noodle.
3:46 pm
manny’s torta is probably my fav local sandwich.
4:01 pm
Those little rice bun sammiches with BBQ pork @ Moto-I are mighty tasty, too.
8:50 pm
Have you tried the sammies at the St. Paul Cheese Shop yet? cheeeeeeesiliscious.

*not the one drunk at the F&W classic in Aspen, not the one married to Booby Flay. Whoopsie, did I misspell that?
8:47 pm
Did “Steph March” call me a drunk?
9:14 pm
You just came out of your stupor long enough to notice that, eh?
