Minnesota made it into the New York Times again this week, this time — for schooling students in Hip Hop. Yeah, that’s right! “Bing, bing, boom. There it is.”
McNally Smith College of Music began a three-semester hip-hop studies program in September that school officials claim is the first in the nation. The fourteen students now enrolled, 12 men and 2 women (we need to work on this, girls!), will earn their diplomas after completing a recorded project and a live performance. Among the eight teachers are DJ Freddy Fresh and Doomtree’s Dessa Darling.
”The best rap is fine art. It is poetry. It is music. It is rhythm. It is color. It is living history. It is of political, societal commentary. It’s significant work. None of that is easy,” says President Harry Chalmiers.
