According to Perfect Duluth Day, Minnesota guitarist Jack Rose died from a heart attack on Saturday at the age of 38. Known for both his solo work and his work with the group Pelt, Rose just played a show with Charlie Parr at Pizza Luce last September. According to Pitchfork, he was also recently signed to Thrill Jockey, who are set to release his tenth solo album, Luck in the Valley, on February 23.
On that sad note, let’s look at some more happy music news:
Steve Marsh gives us a Q&A with punkabilly rocker and former Stray Cat Brian Setzer — who married into the neighborhood in 2005. “It’s become home—the Stray Cats even reunited recently at the Fine Line for Setzer’s 50th birthday. But he’s been on tour all summer… and they’re going out again this fall with The Brian Setzer Orchestra in support of two records: Songs from Lonely Avenue, a new album recorded at local producer Mark Stockert’s studio, and the re-released The Ultimate Christmas Collection. They have a local date at Mystic Lake on November 22.”
And L’etoile offers a great write-up on Doomtree Diva Dessa, the annual Doomtree Blowout (which was this past weekend), and her upcoming album (due out on January 22nd). “The album will traverse new and unbeaten paths for Dessa, jumping from aggressive raps to hymn-like a capella cuts — and Dessa anticipates a hard sell due to the diversity of styles it showcases.”
