Google is now hosting LIFE magazine’s image archive. I give you Minnesota as seen through LIFE’s photographers over the years:
- General Electric uniforms from 1918
- A tiny burn victim from 1940
- A Conscientious Objector participates in a semi-stavation program at the U of M in 1945
- Scandinavian royalty in Minnesota in 1958
- The Guthrie, from the late 60s or early 70s
- Jack Baker, an out of the closet homosexual, who ran for U of M student president in 1971
- The famous 1973 cover image of Wendell Anderson and a fish

They’ve only put up about 10 percent of the total archive, so we can expect a lot more images down the road.

I wonder if any royalty from the Kingdom of Scandinavia will ever visit again…

Jack, those shoes just do NOT go with those jeans. Honestly, no wonder he lost the election.

@sandburg: I’m sure the photo wasn’t identified that way when it was originally published in LIFE.
Re: Southdale. Much of my grade school youth was spent there, lusting after the pre-video games and pinball machines that were in the basement next to the shoeshine guy.

The photo of the royals looks to have been taken at the St. Paul Hotel, where that wallpaper still hangs, I believe.
In looking around other photos on that site, it appears that the only option for purchasing prints is to buy a framed, matted version for $80 and up — lame.
