The Pioneer Press reports this disturbing story: The handgun found near a teenager shot and killed by a Minneapolis police officer in 2006 could not have been carried by the teen, new court documents allege: It had last been in possession of police before it was found next to the body of Fong Lee.

Thanks for linking this, Max — a very disturbing set of allegations. Here’s more in today’s SPPandD: http://tinyurl.com/cqyrhe.
12:13 pm
If an ordinary citizen shot and killed a man, placed a gun next to his body and falsified documents to cover up inconsistancies in that gun’s chain of custody, they and their conspiritors would find themselves behind bars for a very long time. Yet, Jason Andersen (scumbag murderer – MPD) get’s a shiny medal, keeps his job and feedom, and his buddies on the force get off clean too.
12:30 pm
This is totally disgusting. Why isn’t this front-page news in both papers? WHY IS A STORY ABOUT TEQUILA on the Strib home page instead? Why aren’t people more outraged by this?
Um, forget protest at the G20 Summit. This makes me want to protest at the MPD and Star Tribune. Why are they burying this important news? REAL NEWS that affects everyone in the community? PITCHFORKS, people! PITCHFORKS!
12:43 pm
Molly, I think it was on the front page of the Strib yesterday. At least the online version, that’s where I read about it yesterday. And I think all the TV news stations carried it, so calm down.
1:00 pm
No, what was on the Strib homepage yesterday was that Andersen got Medal of Valor in a disputed shooting–but he was clear of all charges. What wasn’t in the story were the details of the lawsuit. What’s more, the subhed said that the family was “critical” of the officer…Critical? How about they have proof that he fired 8 bullets into their son who wasn’t carrying a weapon?!
Also, calm down? No. I will not “calm down.” This is disgusting. And we should hold our police and local media to higher standards.
1:19 pm
I’m disgusted along with you, Molly. And Drew raises an important point, too. The offending officers should be arrested and tried just like any private citizen would be under similar circumstances.
1:34 pm
I totally agree. And considering that the chase and subsequent killing occurred because Andersen said he saw someone pass Fong Lee a gun–while he was riding a bike??–which, according to all of the witnesses and docs is fabricated, Andersen should be tried for first-degree murder and the entire MPD should be investigated for its (lack of) standards, and not just in similar cases.
2:07 pm
Oh, sorry, it was on the front page of the paper TWO days ago. And a follow up yesterday. And another today.
My point wasn’t that you shouldn’t be upset about the action, my point was that there has been sufficient news coverage and you shouldn’t get upset about THAT aspect.
3:24 pm
kc! is right: It has been all over both papers’ web sites the last two days. Also, if you were a consistent user of those sites, you would know that the story rotation changes throughout the day as other news bubbles up, stories develop, etc…
4:42 pm
I read the Strib about four times a day and never saw it on their home page. Again, that’s purely anecdotal, but from what you’re saying here there was only a link. This needs to be THE top story.
4:45 pm
What’s more, the media needs to demand Chief Dolan talk to them. He was out of town and unavailable to comment right after the shooting, too. This is not a story that should “go away quietly.” There needs to be much more attention paid to it (a link on the home page? NOT ENOUGH!) and a formal investigation by the AG needs to follow.
4:55 pm
You lost me at “I read the Strib about four times a day”
8:57 pm
This was on the front page of the strib a few days ago for the better part of the day. Just because you didn’t see it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. Spaz.
10:09 pm
How about we not call each other names we remember from way back in 6th grade.
10:20 pm
Whatever, Max. MollyP’s a big doodiehead and I’m totally gonna beat her up at recess tomorrow.
9:11 am
Cooties!
6:46 pm
Dillweed.
9:49 pm
Whatever, MollyP, you smell like feet.
11:34 am
By the way, the story was finally on the front page of the Strib yesterday. David Channen did a great job reporting it. And ironically, Chief Dolan still won’t speak?!
