The Strib does a story on salaries for the local arts community, and reveals that Guthrie Artistic Director Joe Dowling pulled in $682,229 in salary and benefits last year: Even discounting a one-time bonus of $100,000, his compensation surpassed that of his peers not only in New York but also at nonprofit theaters elsewhere in the United States. So, Joe Dowling — overpaid?

When she left, the Walker’s Kathy Halbreich was making $585,000. I’m guessing Olga Viso doesn’t clear that much (although she did come from DC, so she might’ve demanded a fair bit). When you consider that a stinkin’ million dollars would’ve kept Theatre de la June Lune open, it’s kind of a travesty, isn’t it?

Well, I don’t really want to comment on if he’s overpaid or not, but I sure hope he doesn’t whine about funding for the Guthrie until he takes a paycut…

I think he’s doing a great job and I have no basis on whether he’s overpaid or not. I’m sure he puts a lot of that money back into the local arts community, at least I would hope so.

I am of the opinion that no one can actually be worth a salary of $682K a year, no matter who they are or what they do. It just seems out of proportion.

I always figured that if you could get it, you were worth it to somebody.

It’s a good thing the Guthrie pushed through the new arts sales tax. They’ve got overhead!

I just think it’s kinda ridiculous to make that much a year and live in Minne…but that’s just me…maybe he’s still paying off some student loans or something…

That place must be endowed to the hilt. Dowling’s salary could be chump change.

Every few years Mary Abbe does an article about this. If I remember correctly, Hallbreich made something closer to $350-$400k.
I also remember Joe Dowling voluntarily took a large pay cut while the Guthrie was running it’s capital campaign.

Too easy.
How much do you think old Joe gave the Geezer & the Dingbat?

It can be found if you’re that curious.

So does Bill McGuire.

Plus Joe hates gay people. So that means he doesn’t have to tip them very well.

Kathy Halbreich did not make $585K. She made a lot of money, but not that much. I think pendulum is right on, around $340k.
$340k or $600k is a lot of money, but being the director of a big non-profit completely takes over your life. You travel a lot, and not in a fun way. You often have to hob-nob with people you probably don’t really feel like having to rub elbows with. Your entire social life is focused around and institution, and your responsible for making ends meet for a lot of artists and staff. So, yeah, $600K is a lot, probably too much, but somewhere in the lower six figure range isn’t unreasonable at all.

That is so high a salary, at least compared to the ones I found on salary list Hopefully it is well spent

Overpaid compared to me, for sure. Overpaid compared to the football coach or the basketball coach at the U? Nope.

Compilation of various sources. Btw, the Strib didn’t break the story’s facts, Bloomberg last year with near direct quotes. Also it wasn’t really an article on arts salaries to begin with, just Joe the Plumber (I mean Joe the Art Director).
