We sports fans are fine with athletes who are criminals when our teams are good. This — is unacceptable.

Can we just drop the “student-athlete” charade, when it comes to the so-called revenue sports? In fact, how about coming to some arrangement with pro sports to pay us for providing a farm system for their steroid-fueled entertainment empire and stop ripping off students and taxpayers to build their arenas?

I’m pretty sure the U stopped just shy of disbanding the football team between the 70s and 90s, and nobody noticed.

Well then, let’s just kick out all the students who’ve been ticketed for drinking and/or SUSPECTED in a crime. You’d have to shut the whole “U” down…….

In the spirit of accuracy, let’s not forget Nathan Tow-Arnett, a football player accused this week of beating up a woman at a party: http://www.mndaily.com/2009/11/10/football-player-accused-assault-female-student.

Sounds like a great idea. Maybe we could sell the stadium to the vikings to help with the next state budget.

Yep I’m gonna have to second Tom on this one.

The sports program as a whole was ranked 14th in the country for the year. That hardly seems like “[not] doing very well at all.”

I actually wouldn’t care if they were #1 in everything. It should still be minor-league professional sports. It makes about as much sense as Target having its own major-league baseball team staffed entirely by its accounting department, which actually can’t do math because they were recruited for baseball. And they all get free scooters.

Gopher women don’t seem to get in trouble with the law (or at least they don’t get caught!!!). How about diverting some funds to the teams with the lowest collective rap sheets?

The UofM has a football program?

Oh, yes, Jane, yes! Divert funds to Gopher women’s sports. That’s the answer. Hell, it’s only right. Just think of the message it sends.

I can’t tell if you are being sarcastic.

Not at all. Entirely serious. I think it’s a great idea.

Okay then. $$ to Gopher Women it is.

Trevor Mbakwe is likely to be found innocent of the charges as it will be shown (at trial) that he was misidentified by his accuser. He would not have been allowed to remain practicing with the team if Mr Maturi and Tubby felt that he was likely guilty of the charges. Royce White may not ever play for the U. That’s sad, but his stupid actions will likely lead to this conclusion. Two of the four highly ranked recruits are doing fine in school and are hardly mentioned, Justin Cobbs and Rodney Williams, let’s not forget about these two. So IMO, 3 of the 4 highly touted recruits will remain on the team, while one is likely lost. Oh by the way, this team is ranked in the top 25 and is poised to have a great year. Having the Barn sold out and rockin is always a great live event.

Or just make it a D-3 athletic program.

When I was teaching at the U, I had a few women intercollegiate athletes in my classes. They were all conscientious students. As I recall, two or three of them even got As.

That’s true in my classes at the U as well. Brittany McCoy was a great student, and starts for the U Women’s Baseketball team.

Women Gophers FTW!

Where do you think that revenue for women’s sports at the U comes from?

The crime-ridden ranks of Men’s Gophers? My wallet? Cash for Clunkers?

Just when you think there’s nothing more embarrassing than the Gophers’ football uniforms…

Seriously, I must have missed the amendment that said when the new stadium opens they have to have uniforms that look like a**.
