This isn’t a me thing. It’s all about you. And while I will, regardless, do the job of scouring the World Wide Web for interesting stories, we really need more voices here, not just in comments, but in posts. For most of you, your comments are just secondary reactions, once you’ve seen the post. But I want to feel you at the source. I want to see you fill this page with what you find interesting, local, relevant — not just on open threads. Open. You see it. Something stirs. You share. We discuss. Open.
Hell, most of you are already doing the work. Time to share.
Emily Says So offered a great roundup last Thursday (and I’m not just saying that because she mentioned MNSpeak).
Is That All You’ve Got? has been offering great health care roundups (which I’m trying to lure here).
Lazy Lightning, now a regular stop, today offers a look at City Council wages — good MNSpeak fodder for conversation.
And Killing Batteries is offering all kinds of advice on how to deal with detainment and bribery (or even arrest) while traveling.
I’m thinking any one of these could have made a great MNSpeak post… kind of.

Still waiting for those promised HTML tools in Wordpress. Then I’ll offer posts again.
8:29 am
Deal.
8:40 am
Thanks for the mention Cristina!

Your grammar and gramdad say “counsel” should be “council.” Unless you need an attorney.
I think I need some coffee.
8:56 am
Cripes. Clearly I’m the one who needs some coffee. And some sleep!
9:03 am
Max would recommend Irish coffee, I think, and I would take him up on his recommendation. Anyone for some Jameson?
9:04 am
I’ll take a spash in my coffee, noodle. Domo.
9:05 am
Mmm, Jameson.
9:32 am
And we might as well have a wee bit o’ musical accompaniment while we refresh ourselves. Top o’ the mornin’ to ya.

Re: Killer Batteries. It’s not even a trip overseas that can get you into trouble. As stereotypical as it may seem, there are parts of the South I would still be wary of in twenty-aught-nine.

Not to be a snark, but why should people post those things here, when they’re generating content for their own blog? Unless you want to allow cross-posting or self-pimping, which has typically been a no-no in posts here.

For the “Exposure” Jason, it’s all the rage… some publishers believe it may be the future currency of new media.
Like my earlier comment in the Gen X thread…I still prefer green backs when it comes to compensation.

MNspeak was better when the moderator didn’t try to make us do all the work.

MNspeak was like Groundhog Day when the moderator didn’t try to make us do all the work.

Slacker!

Jason, I am all for self-pimping in the form of posts linking back to authors’ blogs — as long as it’s relevant.
And, Jane, whatev.
I’m not asking for anything new here. Back in the Rex days, people posted. Hell, I even posted. And yes, there are still one or two of you doing this occasionally. I’m just trying to encourage a little more of that. That’s all, folks.
1:38 pm
Oh noes she didin…
1:39 pm
uh oh a clarification comment. Can I have that feature?
1:50 pm
Clarify away.
1:50 pm
But I’m lazy! And my skill set lies in making comments, not in creating content!
Sigh, okay I will try to keep my eyes open for something to post. And then I’ll comment on it. And if no one else comments on it, I’ll create fake profiles to have them comment, so I look popular and interesting.
1:53 pm
MNSpeak was so much better after people other than Rex stopped posting but before only Max was posting.
3:08 pm
But I want to feel you at the source.
Well that depends, are you hot?
But seriously folks…people aren’t posting here because folding MNspeak into whatever is Secrets of the City killed the culture and brand of the site. It probably started before that, though, but the boneheaded merger definitely accelerated it becoming what it now is, which is the message board for whatever is Secrets of the City. Plus, people can share links, discover them and converse via Twitter and Facebook now. The message board for whatever is Secrets of the City has to compete with that, which it fails at. So if you want it to change, make it indispensable.

That would be, like, a Petters-esqe comment ponzi scheme.
3:11 pm
What Kevin said. Although I don’t think SOTC killed the MNSpeak brand. I don’t know many sites where the community posts items that are thriving anymore. That conversation has moved to Facebook.
3:27 pm
While were piling on. I think the move back to wordpress was a poor choice.
If your trying to re-invent and re-capture conversations that are lost to twitter/facebook you might need to try another tack… Is there a facebook Mnspeak group? Ning group? how about a mnspeak curated list on twitter? Google Wave?
3:32 pm
I actually think there’s a huge advantage to the way MNSpeak is set up now. Editor with a voice, setting the agenda for interesting talk.
3:51 pm
There’s also the advantage that one doesn’t have to “friend” or follow everyone to be able to follow the whole conversation.
Ning? what the hell is that? How many social networking sites is one going to have to follow/join/pay for in the near future?
4:03 pm
yes, what ryanl said. you can’t beat them, so join them. crossover to the dark twitter side. You either adapt or you don’t.
4:24 pm
Just for the record, there is a MNSpeak Google Wave.
4:32 pm
I’ve looked into Ning, and it does seem stupid. Not stupid in the Facebook or Twitter sense, but stupid in the it’s so dumb everyone else you know won’t use it, therefore forcing you into using it kinda dumb.
4:46 pm
Oh Im not a “surfer” so I didn’t know about mnspeak hangin ten.
4:57 pm
For twitter integration you could just encourage the use of post tags as hashtags, then run a twitter widget alongside the comments showing the results for that particular hashtag.
5:05 pm
Using Facebook as a platform for public discussion is crazy. Simply because it’s not truly public. Plus, I can’t access Facebook during the workday. Mostly that.
6:04 pm
That is almost exactly what we’re working on, ryan1.
