Andrea Swensson tackles the 11 year legacy of the Minnesota hip hop supergoup the Heiruspecs. If you’ve somehow managed to remain unfamiliar with them, here are some started pages: Their Web page, their MySpace page (with music), and a recent video in which an Obama impersonator break dances.

They made an appearance at the Martin Devaney show at Turf Club last Wednesday night and I thought they were freaking awesome – and I almost never like rap or hip-hop of any kind. Plus, there’s the added hilarity of Devaney being involved with them, since he’s about the whitest guy ever.

I just Googled to figure out who Martin Devaney was and I didn’t solve my question but it looks like Sean from Heiruspecs is also Martin Devaney’s bass player.

Martin is an occasional MnSpeak commentor. He’s also an excellent local singer songwriter.
Sean is the brother of Steve McPherson, who occasionally comments here as McP.
Both are fans of Leonard Nimoy, who sometimes posts here as VulcanD00d.

Don’t forget about VulcanD00d’s musical ability…

Martin also plays Chuck and Sean’s Trivia… and wins a lot. I suspect there’s something going on. Either that, or I’m bad at trivia. Which is probably actually the case.

And Leonard Nimroy was in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country with Christian Slater who was in Murder in the First with Kevin Bacon.

Eventually all MnSpeak/SotC threads turn to Bacon.

And Devaney was at one time the Heiruspecs’ saxaphone player.

Minneapolis hip hop is where it’s at! You should also check out my boys, Nerve and DJ Arkitekt a new group out of Minneapolis that performs a hip-hop indie rock fusion with an album set drop this summer. Having opened for national acts like Muja Messiah and Eyedea, Nerve and DJ Arkitekt are ready to win over new listeners every day.
