Minnesota is deep in the hole financially, but the state still owns a premier golf resort, a sprawling amateur sports complex, a big airport, a major zoo and land holdings the size of the Central American country of Belize. The AP.

Bad idea, do not want, epic FAIL.

Privately operated airports are all over Europe. They seem to function, though Heathrow is a bit of a mess. But I’m not so certain that has anything to do with it operated by BAA.

Well, Rat, private ownership of airports has certainly kept the Europian economy from tanking like ours!
Oh, wait.

I don’t know that I’d shed any tears over the loss of the golf resort, but I’d hate to lose any public land.

Agreed, Jeffk.
Although it would be good to know more deets on the golf resort’s finances. A consistent money maker for the state, or a bad investment of public monies that should be sold off?

I don’t think I offered up airport privatization up as a complete solution to anything, Bob.

I know. Just thought I would unfairly attack your your acurate comment about airport ownership in Europe.
Seriously, though, this is being offered as a short term solution to the budget crisis without raising taxes. It also has the secondary purpose of “shrinking government” — in the form of all of the state employees that work at or with these places.
I think it’s a gimmick, not a solution. The idea is not completely without merit, if some properties cost the state more than they are worth, or if they lack long-term future value (which the airport has, I believe).

T-Paw, the king of budgetary band-aids!
Until everyone takes this problem seriously, we’ll be doing this stupid dance every 4-6 years. Structural fixes, please.

I’ve got a feeling that we’re going to get a reminder in the next few years why a constitutionally mandated balanced budget is not necessarily a good thing.
