WCCO asks, “are Minnesotans sick of winter?” Yeah, no shit we are. Aren’t we sick of winter every year, about two or three weeks into it?
“We’re tired of it but I’ve been living here for 24 years, so it’s as to be expected,” said Laura Mlynarek throwing snow from the sidewalk.
“I’m done with winter. It could end pretty soon,” said Bruce Nelson as he shoveled his driveway.
“I am getting a little sick of it. Minnesota’s getting old this winter,” said Gregory Wacker while running his snow blower.
Yeah, no shit. But… we know what to expect, right? Why so much complaining? Is this winter really any worse than the rest? Don’t we say that every year?
And don’t we have real news to report? Cripes!

I’m heading up to my parents’ cabin this weekend to do some winter activities and I’m pretty excited. I’m going snowshoeing. Maybe skiing if I can get ski boots that fit. I don’t hate winter as much as I hate cold. A day like today is just fine with me (and we pay for snow removal.)

Is this post really asking if there is substance free fluff on local TV news?
12:31 pm
Oh, I think this goes beyond the typical substance-free fluff into the ridiculous. But.. what do I know?

I believe that weather news ranks high among the most popular features of local newscasts, which is why they dedicate so much time to weather, and spend so much money on the fancy weather radar systems.

Think Snow.
I love this winter…I agree with KC it’s not the winter or the snow, its the brutal cold that gets me.
Of course getting a snowmobile has changed my outlook just a smidge.
Seriously if ya got lemons, make lemon meringue pie or something.

if you are still getting your news from TV or radio (other than one hour only of MPR per day), you are not getting the full picture, and are wasting your time.

Saying “And don’t we have real news to report? Cripes!” DRIVES ME NUTS.• What is “real news?” Yours may be different from mine.• Does one story on “non-real news” really crowd out an important story? Not usually. It’s usually a trade-off on one discretionary story for another. Is it silly to ask if we’re sick of winter considering this winter has been quite unremarkable? Uh.. probably.

I’ll take a weather story over a Person Bravely Fighting Some Kind of Disease story any day of the week.

Jason, I think what some people get frustrated about is we seem to get so many “weather stories” instead of a report on, say, the simmering controversy over Minneapolis hiring someone who allegedly admitted that he has no experience with ADA issues for a job where dealing with ADA issues and disability outreach is a primary duty of the position.

It’s a fair thing to get frustrated about. I guess I read too many e-mails from people who don’t like whatever we covered that say: “Don’t you have real news to report?” Yeah, we do. We try to balance things out. I should look up the web clicks on the weather story, though. I bet they were through the roof.
