Diablo Cody: Sophomore Slump?

I trust Ebert more than any other film critic. He and I rarely disagree on movies.

… then again, after reading the entirety of Covert’s review, it sounds somewhat convincing. Ebert does have a bit of a dirty-old-man thing going these days… maybe he was just distracted by Megan Fox. Tough call.

I think Ebert spent a lot of time in the Skyway Lounge…

I agreed more with Gene Siskel.

Orson Welles had a couple of clunkers, too … but that’s not to say Diablo is an obese, cigar-smokin’, wine-chuggin’ outrĂ©. She’s not obese, for one thing.

Dana Stevens’ review in Slate is very positive (”she’s learning to channel the more egregious lingo into the mouths of characters who might actually talk that way”).

I bet this movie gets better reviews from women than from men.

Evidently this reviewer has had some conversations with high school aged cannibals or has some unique insight into how they speak.

Had the film been called High School Cannibal, I would have gone to see it without even reading the reviews.

10,000,000 Sparber Fans want to read teh screenplay for High School Cannibal

The Salon review made it look horrible. That, and Megan Fox.

Per the Guardian UK this film is bound to lead to a “Diablo Cody Backlash”, . pshaw. like that would ever happen.

And here I thought DC backlash was purely Minneapolitan response to feelings of jealousy and inadequacy.

When is High School Cannibal coming out? I am soooo there! (Even if Megan Fox is in it.)

There was a “Diablo Cody Backlash” after she wrote a good movie. I wonder if there will be more or less this time.

The backlash wasn’t against the “good movie,” it was against her tired “stripper with a heart of gold” routine.

I wasn’t that crazy about her movie. I mean, Juno had some good points, but I felt it wasn’t beyond criticism. However, every time I raised any criticism, a chorus of “you’re just jealous” broke out.

The backlash wasn’t against the “good movie,” it was against her tired “stripper with a heart of gold” routine.

Then, the backlash shouldn’t be against her but against the media that perpetrated that image time and time again. Every darn article written about her always focused on her stripper gig; few focused on the fact she wrote the Juno screenplay sitting every day in a Target Pizza Hut.

But, IMHO, much of the backlash is more about her being a freshman Oscar winner. Not too many people get any kind of award for their first screenplay, etc. Winning an Oscar her first time out undoubtedly and unnecessarily raised any expectations about her next film or series. A good set-up for failure; like winning a baseball title your rookie season.

She doesn’t have a heart of gold?

I met someone last week who knew her. Said he had a lot of opinions and an encyclopedic knowledge of movies.

If having a lot of opinions is bad, everyone on this board is screwed.

Having admittedly hated upon her once upon a time, I’m certain that most of the backlash is the result of jealous backbiting on the part of would-be authors.

And did someone anonymously say she had a “Heart of Gold”? Becuase I’ll bet she’d be the first to deny it.

Oh, the DB hatin is for certain good ol’ Twin Citian jealousy. Although I agree with Max in that it’s impossible to criticize her work without being branded a jealous/hater/anti-feminist. Technically speaking though, has anyone noticed that she is a little too zealous with her adverb usage? Or am I just a jealous/hater/anti-feminist?

DB=DC. Oops.

Not saying she isn’t or is a good person; just saying that the way the she and the movie was covered was an annoying trope that’s used over and over and over. Whether that was her fault, or whether the media unfairly ran with the story is beside the point.

That said, a lot of local media certainly got pretty riled up against her personally because of her quick rise, which seemed pretty dumb.

To be fair, I would have hated Juno regardless of who made it and enjoy Coen brothers flix. Although, the amount of explaining I have to do involving Fargo being in ND and not all MN sounding like that, almost makes me wish they’d never made “Fargo”. Is it really backlash if you never thought it was good?

Oh wait, I do like the United States of Tara, although I wish they’d replace Aiden from Sex and the City (John Corbett?) He seems like a stoner with an acting problem.

I thought Juno was good, but I’m not likely to see Jennifer’s Body just because it looks like a routine teen thriller.

A routine teen thriller would’ve done better than 6.8 million on opening weekend.
