So apparently there was once a female Charlie Brown named Charlotte Braun, but she wasn’t very popular and Schulz wasn’t happy with her. That didn’t stop him, however, from responding to a letter criticizing her by telling an irate letter writer that “you and your friends will have the death of an innocent child on your conscience” and then drawing a picture of Braun with an axe in her head. The ax thing sounds apocryphal to me.
Apparently the letter, which does include the quote “you and your friends will have the death of an innocent child on your conscience,” is in the Library of Congress.

Sounds apocryphal, except there’s the drawing of the girl with the axe in her head…. Duh. I’d heard of the letter before, but I should have followed the link to see it myself.
Schulz was known to be quite prickly from time to time when he felt fans or colleagues were disrespecting his strip. According to the David Michaelis biography, his response to strip ideas suggested by friends could range from curt to devastating. And he apparently threatened to kill off Snoopy when Lynn Johnston was planning to do a death-of-family-dog series of strips. Apparently he disapproved of her idea as inappropriate for a family strip….

Schulz didn’t like football, that’s for sure.
Or psychiatrists.
