WCCO did a story on this last night. I did a thing last year on whether shopping local was really shopping green. (and wrote about it here.) Bottom line: Shopping local is a good thing for the local economy, but not as much of an environmental slam dunk as many people try to make it.

Any Christmas gifts I’m giving are extremely local, since I’m making them myself.

Looks like Jason has mastered how to hyperlink his comments. What am I missing?

Explain slowly please, I’m old and not very bright.

Not to say that the can’t coincide, and it’s great when they do, but personally, I’ve always seen them as having different goals.

If my aim is to shop local, shopping green is a secondary concern. If Im going to go green, shopping locally will take the back seat.

Bob, it’s plain ol’ HTML. something about ethanol

I think my presents are created in Denver. (At the mint)

Maybe we could list some Minnesota product sites? I found this recently and like some of the stuff. Liebling Designs.

I buy a lot of Minnesota art by doing a search for local artists on Etsy.

I Like You in South Minneapolis has all local, handmade goods. I buy 75% of all my gifts there.

B&Lu is a local online store for great plus sized clothing for women.

Here are some shop local ideas I blogged about last year.

Lots of good local shopping opportunities coming up:
This weekend: MCAD Student Art Sale
This weekend: Cache at the Casket Arts Building Dec. 6-7, No Coast Craft O Rama.

That would be, Dec 6-7 NoCoast Craft-o-rama

Actually, I think it’s Friday December 5th and Saturday December 6th.

I went last year and picked up some cute stuff.

And you’re totally right Ingrid. We’ve done most of our Christmas shopping there since the first one in 2005.

Local gifts don’t have to necessarily be made in Minnesota.

Purchasing gift certificates from your local beautician, barber, and massage therapist will make a great present, and support neighborhood businesses.

Yes it will. Maybe someone who reads this will get me a gift certificate to a massage therapist (hint, hint).

On Sat at 2 PM, there will be a live Craft-a-thon at the NoCoast Craft-o-rama: teams of 4 will be given a bunch of stuff and turn it into something cool before your very eyes. There will be prizes.

Joanna do you have a link for that? My wife might be interested.
