This is as relevant as the fact that a $10 pair of Rustlers from Wal-Mart is pretty much the same as $200 7 for All Mankind designer denim from Len Druskin. Yankees fans expect a postseason. Twins fans hope for one. The high end always has diminishing returns, like a Weber's Law of economics.

@ryanl: Pre-free agency, and certainly pre-TV, ball club payrolls were a bit more equitable between teams than now. ‘Course, a deep-pocketed owner (e.g. Colonel Rupert) in the ol’ days could still outspend a miser (e.g. Clark Griffith) and the results were still pretty much the same as today.
