KMSP hops on the

106 Reader Comments

Mr. Osama, er, Obama, is not qualified for higher office at this time.

He does have a cute and catchy name, though.

Which probably accounts for 85% of his appeal to brainless liberals.

Thank you.

I thought the station’s response/apology delivered by Robyne last night was well stated and sincere.

The comments on that YouTube page are hilarious in their stupidity. To think that a weekend newscast would purposely try to smear Obama by airing 3 seconds of video of a draft obama rally during the wrong story is insane.

It was clearly a mistake. An embarrassing mistake, but come on people.

Here’s what the News Director posted on obamarama.

Some would say the current occupant at the White House is also not qualified for higher office at this time.

People actually think KMSP is competent enough to do this on purpose?

During the recent Bush speech, every station ran a graphic underneath that said “Presidential Address”, except Fox9, which had a slogan: “Iraq, Moving Forward”.

Sincere apologies will not overcome that kind of pervasive bias.

JD – nobody said ‘intentional.’ Clearly it was a sloppy accident. The responses from the news director and Robyne were good and appropriate. However, that doesn’t make it any less sad that numerous similar situations have happened nationwide. Are all of them accidents? Any similar accidents for Tom Vilsack?

Does anyone really truly believe that the citizens of the US are ready to elect a woman or a minority as the President of the United States of America?

For christsake we have had only one Catholic White Male President and according to the US census in 2001 Catholics were the largest Christian group by population in the US.

^^^

Thats not KMSP’s fault, when ever there is a presidential speech. Kare11 uses NBC/Nightly News; WCCO uses CBS and our local fox station has no choice but to use FOX NEWS; so that graphic was all FOX NEWS

If you lie down with dogs…

The press coverage for Obama has been overwhelmingly positive. And Rob, commenters on the youtube link certainly did say it was intentional. One just wrote, “Propaganda.” Another wrote about how Fox News lies. All of this for a silly technical mistake? It’s nuts!

If this is the direction that we’re all going — constantly seeing conspiracy in every minor incident — maybe I need to find a new career. It’s gonna be a long two years.

Mr. Osama, er, Obama, is not qualified for higher office at this time.

I’m for letting the voters decide that, Bud. How about you?

Derusha – propaganda is often delievered somewhat subliminally, right? I guess we’ll see if it happens 3, 4, 5 more times, then we’ll know if we’re onto something or just on something…

FOX NEWS is not to be taken seriously.

They are like an even less funny version of MAD TV.

Just like bud jr. is a less entertaining but equally nefarious version of Mazaspaza.

The Rat is Hilary Clinton, apparently.

Mr. DeRusha,

To your point, of course this one incident is probably an accident and some of those comments at obamara are definitely over the top. BUT…Democrats and lefties in general are rightly on a hair trigger. Remember how Gore was treated by the so-called liberal media? Already Jeff Greenfield has been on CNN discussing how Obama dresses like the president of Iran. Seriously.

Jason: It IS time to get out. People see conspiracy in every phrase, every word. My favorite was an allegation of bias because the letters on the jump headline “were slanted.” They were in italics.

Just what you would expect from those racists who run Channel 9. You’ll never see a black anchor on that station, let me tell you…

I believe that TV news is the worst form of media. Local news is especially bad.

It is painful to watch a 30 min broadcast where 10 minutes are spent explaining the weather. How about just spend 1 min telling what to expect the next 1-2 days. The average viewer is not a meteorologist and does not need these explanations about pressure systems etc.

So few of the local news stories have any quality to them. Fox often promotes TV shows during their broadcast. Is who is winning American Idol really newsworthy?

I rarely watch local news, and if I do it is for entertainment purposes. After all, that is the model news stations are using. Make it entertaining so people will watch more.

TV in its present form is garbage, not worth watching, harming America and the world would be a better place without it. Thus I don’t have one.

News a la BBC would be acceptable. They seem to have high standards.

Let’s not forget the clinton news networks inadvertant red X over Cheney’s face. The technician laughed when asked if it was a mistake.

KMSP has done worse things. For example after the weather guy once commented “Good golly Miss Molly, it’s going to be cold”, Jeff Passolt responded with “Thank you, Chuck Berry!”. How irresponsible!

Wacky lefties are just as scary as wacky wingnuts.
Just think of how many times you’ve ordered fast food (or Luce) and your order was screwed up. Okay, now translate that to a TV station or a web site.

Vilsack only gets a fraction of the media coverage. If/when such a screwup happened with him it wouldn’t be news because he doesn’t have Obama’s rockstar status. Plus, he’s a white guy from Iowa.

Yeah, that’s unforgivable.

TV in its present form is garbage, not worth watching, harming America and the world would be a better place without it. Thus I don’t have one.

I think there is more good television out there than you have time to watch.

Thus I don’t have one”

So you don’t own a TV. Wanna medal?

A couple rebuttals (then it’s back to ruining America):

* Our weather guy gets about 2 minutes at 10. Not ten.

* If KMSP runs Barack Obama footage 3, 4 or 5 more times during stories on sex offenders, indeed, duderino, then it’s propaganda. Let me know when that happens.

* There is no such thing as “the media.” There are local stations, network entertainment divisions, network news divisions, talk radio stations, newspapers, on and on. To complain about “the media” is as silly as complaining about “the Internet.”

* And I love it when critics of local news include in their complaints, “I rarely watch local news.” Awesome. Could we do a better job? Absolutely. On most nights, though, I think we do a decent job of giving people a slice of life and a snapshot of their local world.

I hate local news. I’ll only watch Jason. I have a weak spot for dimples.

Do you actually have a medal to give out, Rat?

No, Sparber you’ll give it out.

The MNSpeak Medal for Outstanding Self-righteousness.

Lotsa potential winners.

I’ll take a medal if it means that I am not a zombie who spends hours watching tv every day.

“decent job of giving people a slice of life and a snapshot of their local world.”

That sounds quite good actually, I wish there was more of that.

What I have a problem with is the non-news entertainment garbage. One can easily watch the news and see how a large part of it does not qualify as news.

On the other hand, I did enjoy Jason’s story on transportation. That is more like what I want.

Lastly, what is up with the unprofessionalism of the anchors? Every story is told with this ridiculous ton of voice which seems to make it sensational. The friendly chit-chatting between them is way too common and unnecessary.

The BBC anchor have a proper tone of voice in my opinion.

Personally, I think news would work well if it was a public service. No advertisement and a focus on community. Not just crime and fires.

Thanks Kal. :-) I should get a medal for defending the competition!

OK Derusha, I agree with your 2nd and 3rd points and about half of your last one. I see your point.

But, the weather person only getting 2 minutes!? No way, now that I can’t believe. If that is indeed the case, it’s a looooong 2 minutes. And I agree with vlado4’s rant about that topic.

As for how I feel about local and national media, I don’t even have time to go into it right now. I’m sure there will be plenty of chances on mnspeak in the future, though.

Would the do it for you?

The MNSpeak Medal for Outstanding Self-righteousness.

Oohh! me! me! me!

Special award for smarmy folksiness?

Heh! Later…

You and I actually agree on that one, vlado. Although being a business concerned about ratings isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It does give the viewers all the power. If people stop watching, we start changing what we do.

The problem with broadcasting is that you’re trying to reach a broad audience. I’m not sure that the BBC approach would appeal to a broad swatch of our audience. If people wanted that, I imagine we’d start doing it.

sven hockert Jan 17 2007

frankly, i was surprised to find out that Amy Hockert was hitched because she sure has googly eyes for young Sven. She seems completely mystified by him.

If I hear one more anchor use the word “guy” my head will explode.

“The BBC anchor have a proper tone of voice in my opinion.”

Quite

there’s always the Lehrer report for people wanting deeper news.

The local media in this town hasn’t been honest over the last decade at least. The reason I say this is because the media itself, most locally, is run by GOP spin doctors that wanted to distort the news to the general public. For example, remember what happen to Mike Hatch last year for the Governor’s election? Each and every TV station in the cities had gang up on him over a comment he said to an out-of-town reporter as being a republican hack.

So, why would anyone believe that FOX 9 (KMSP) did the Obama/sex offender story by accident?

Because accidents happen.

Anyone who does anything for mass consumption makes them. I’ve made my share and boy have some been embarassing. I don’t think too many of you have seen a newscast take place and honestly I’ve only seen one. It was total chaos. ESPN did a revealing behind the scenes of a live SportsCenter a few years back and anchors were actually being read the script in his ear while the other anchor was doing highlights. I briefly worked with a former 10pm news producer who never took a lunch break in 10 years.

It doesn’t happen as smoothly as Don Shelby makes it appear, so it’s not unpossible that a guy can get two clips mixed up.

Why would a news organization want to willingly damage its reputation?

Unless you think it goes deeper. Then I think you proabably see black helicopters in your cornflakes in the morning.

I thought it was Hatch’s overtly sexist comments?

I’ll try to do a videoblog this week in our tape room, to show you guys how that all happens. I’ll link it here.

Anyone who does anything for mass consumption makes them. I’ve made my share and boy have some been embarassing.

You take that risk when you write something and sign your real name in black print on white background.

That’s the problem with the Internet. Too many people don’t have to do that anymore. And if they do, it’s the digital version of cooked coffee ground in a matter of hours.

I’ll try to do a videoblog this week in our tape room, to show you guys how that all happens. I’ll link it here.

Wow, Bob, I levelled that charge a really long time ago! It must of stuck in your craw more than I intended it to. Please accept my apologies. (Seriously, no snark here.)

OMG welcome back. Where’ ya been?

At your mom’s.

Yes, mistakes can happen, but I loved how Tommy B and the KQ Team skewered Robyne and KMSP this morning. Their newscasts are a joke….nothing but useless filler stories about the latest celebrity incident or unusual animal sighting that are teased endlessly at every break in the program and the incessant and shameless American Idol re-hashings everynight …. what the fuck?? I guess when you don’t have much of a reputation for solid, meaningful journalism to rely on, you do what you can, even if it is pathetic! Trish Van Pilsum, get your ass back over to WCCO while you’ve still got some credibility left!!

This party is too cool for me. I’m outie.

This happens in newspapers as well. I ran an entire photospread of pics from one school with headlines and cutlines indicating another.

Shit happens when there are a million duties to attend to all at once.

Hey, I don’t have a TV!

But I’m getting one soon (as soon as I can get my tax returns). Not to watch TV, though. Just for movies and so I can get a Wii and stuff.

And, uhhh, I wonder what qualifies someone to hold office in bud jr’s eyes. Probably “being conservative” is enough. Let the voters choose! So long as they don’t choose a liberal, because then they’re stupid and don’t deserve to vote! …

Derusha – propaganda is often delievered somewhat subliminally . . .

– - -

Oh my gosh, no. Old wives’ tale.
Basically, the mind can’t pick up those subtle clues.
Ask any psychologist.
Most will say “subliminal” is a myth,
And admit the topic’s been way oversold,
n mostly is just wishful thinking.
So, enough conspiracy theories.

Although, some attempts have been made.

Periodically, you’ll see Cheney under some banner
edited to show some
dark insult or slam.
Overall, though, it just ain’t happenin’.

.

I actually used to watch the Ch. 9 news until the American Idol cross-promotional crap got to be too much. I thought local news had sunk pretty low, but they showed us just how low it can go.

Sometimes if I’m in the mood for the lurid stuff, I’ll just watch the first few minutes of the local news, but then I turn it off. I get all my weather news from my mom or weather.com, and I get all my sports from the net, newspaper and/or KFAN. I think local TV newscasts aren’t really all that necessary or relevant anymore (no offense to Derusha or any of the other people who are actually on-camera presenting it to us, they all seem like fine folks).

Both local and national is controlled by corporate interests and the advertising dollar, which is why you mostly get a very dumbed-down version of the news and the in-depth story has gone the way of the do-do bird. (Exceptions: Frontline, Moyers, other PBS-type stuff). Olbermann’s the only guy who’s spoken out strongly against the President out of all these cable news shows (otherwise we get more than our fill of Hannity, O’Reilly, Coulter, Tucker C & the rest of the blathering morons). Meanwhile, after his State of the Union last week, all of the local news stations bypassed the democratic response in order to abruptly return us to our “regular programming.” Maybe there’s not a conspiracy here, but come on folks, who can deny these outlets are corporate/republican/advertiser-owned for the most part?

And they wonder why more people are turning to the web and/or clearly intentional spoofs like the Daily Show & Colbert for news???

And they wonder why more people are turning to the web and/or clearly intentional spoofs like the Daily Show & Colbert for news???

I don’t wonder that. People who get their news from comedians obviously prefer comedy to reality. Nothing new there.

Wait — now we’re talking about FOX?

Channel 9 is an affiliate of Fox.

The original post opens up speculation/conspiracy talk about “a local angle to this national trend of casually/accidentally smearing Obama.”

I don’t think we’re too off-base talking about Fox here, Sparber.

Maza – Actually, we prefer comedy over horror.

News bunnies.

Weather bunnies.

Anyone seen Michele Triarsa (sp?) on 5?

Rowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwr!

I should restate that to say “comedy over terror,” since all you get from watching Fox is more and more paranoia about the “evil-doers.”

Is she also Michele-iscious?

Duderino: Last week was not a state of the union address, was it? It was a speech to announce the Iraq strategy. It is not typical to carry a Democratic response to a Presidential address. At any rate, it was a network decision, not a local one.

People who get their news from Fox obviously prefer propaganda, hate speech, and lies to reality. Nothing new there.

speaking of weather bunnies…check out the hispanic station (channel 13 if you don’t have cable) sometime…oh my freaking god, those weather babes are fine. short-skirts, super tight and revealing tops. damn. plus i have no idea what they’re saying, which actually makes the newscast more enjoyable.

That is correct. The president requests time from the major networks when he wants to make a primetime speech. They are under no obligation to offer Democrats anything in return. Could the Democrats ask, sure. Are the networks more likely to turn them down, yes. Does it ever happen like that? I have no idea. In this case, if I ran a network I would have said you guys are already out here before the speech telling us what you think, why do you need free time afterwards?

I watched the Democratic Response on CNN after the last SOTU address and it was patently clear that it wasn’t a response at all and had been written beforehand. Pretty Bogus.

I used to watch the ORLY factor because I thought he was a comedian. When I realized he was serious and people believed him, I couldn’t stomach it anymore.

Anyday now they will all be dead and the world will be a better place.

I stand corrected on the State of the Union thing.

I see Bill O’Reilly is going to be on The Colbert Report tonight after Stephen Colbert goes on The O’Reilly Factor. I can’t stand either of those shows, but I might just channel hop by those two tonight to see if O’Reilly lunges over the desk and gets Colbert into a chokehold and maybe Stephen will get into a discussion that Bill won’t be able to understand and then he’ll blow his stack……..

This is one of the big misconceptions about Fox News. Bill O’Reilly is not news; he is Bill O’Reilly. A man with an hour for a show. Like everyone, he thinks he is right, but he is not masquerading a news reporter.

O’Reilly, Hannity et al are not the NEWS aspect of Fox News, just like a newspaper’s editorial board is not an aspect of its newsroom. If we’re going to apply the TALKING HEADS as proof of a network’s bias, then we also have to include Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews and the rest of the lot when talking about CNN and MSNBC.

Like Maz, I cannot stand to watch Jon Stewart and I am deeply saddened that so many people take him seriously. He does a disservice to our country’s civic mind.

kwatt, I buy your argument, but there are a couple things to consider here. 1) Fox is clearly biased in their coverage, even excluding the talking heads.
2) I’ll give you Olberman (obviously), but Chris Matthews could hardly be considered to have a liberal bias.

“I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, ‘Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.’ “

Yeah, CNN is totally a liberal media outlet.

If we’re going to apply the TALKING HEADS as proof of a network’s bias

Kwatt, in light of your defense of Fox News, has your opinion changes after the recent egregious story they did that said Barak Obama studied at a radical madrasa, and the story that it was Hillary putting out that story. Both of these items proved false by actual journalists, with no sourcing available. Fox simply repeated lies being spread around right-wing land.

Sure, if we acknowledge the mistakes of every other news organization as evidence of bias.

If you would like to point to a similar example from CNN I would be curious to see it. Fox aired an inflamatory story about Obama based on one anonymous source that was proved false. Then they said the story came from Hillary Clinton which was also proved to be a bald-faced lie. So yes, if can show me a similar example from a major national news outlet that displays such a political bias I would be curious to see it.

Do you think anyone at Fox will be fired for such shoddy journalism? The notion you seem to have that Fox is only as bad as everyone else is deeply flawed.

Nightline had a good piece on last night analyzing how the fake Obama madrassa lie got spread around and Fox News morning show had a huge part in propogating the unsourced made up story/lie. It wasn’t just Gibson or O’Reilly, they played it big on their morning news show.
